For safety sake, definitely check the MD oil level before riding.
Also, have you ever used a grease gun on that fitting on the swing arm at the final drive? When I swapped out the 750 FD onto Steppenwolf's SG, the drive shaft was coated in grease clean up to the U-joint from people adding grease by that fitting over the years. I could see some of it making it into the boot and perhaps turning liquidish over time.
More likely a leaking seal on the MD though.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Sounds like the middle drive oil seal. It is often easier to buy a complete middle drive on eBay, rather than replacing the oil seal. The middle drives are usually cheap enoughXS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. XS750 final drive (sometimes). Micron fork brace. Progressive front springs.
