  • Start up after sitting for a long time

Soon I'll be firing up the bike after 18 months of on and off tinkering with it. Is there a procedure to follow to make sure oil gets to all the bearings when a bike has been sitting for so long?

First time you spin it, do it with the plugs out and make sure the oil pressure light goes out. Put the plugs back in, and you should be ready to go.

Yep, I have not removed the plugs, but not a bad idea to save your starter effort. But yes, get it spinning and the oil light to go out so everything is well lubed first.

What the above posted is good idea. Be sure to have plugs in caps and grounded to head prior to cranking so coils can unload or you very well could end up with coil output voltage issues.

Should I spin it over with the kill switch off and plugs left in to avoid possible damage to the coils? I know I shouldn't spin the starter for too long. Will the oil pump prime in 5-10 secs?

It's an 82 XJ1100, the oil light just shows the level of the oil in the pan. Crank it as stated for 8 to 10 seconds, let it rest for 20 seconds and repeat 2 or 3 times. Put the plugs in and go for it.

Mate, if you've given it an oil and filter change while you've been prepping the bike for start up, did you fill the filter housing with oil to prime the filter before refitting it? That'll save a lot of cranking before the oil gets picked up and circulated through your motor.

Pretty sure if kill switch is off it won't spin.

Pull the 4 wire plug on the TCI, and it will spin but not start.
