A guy at work suggested I use a high temp hose instead of a solid pipe between the pipes. Seems like a good idea just welding connectors . Anyone ever do this?

Crossover
I recently put Harley (bad word) Roadking muffs on my 79 Std, no crossover, don't miss it. The bike pulls strong from low RPM to WOT, gas mileage is about the same, 40-41 at road speed.put something smooooth betwen your legs, XS eleven

I've been wrong lots of times before, but it would seem to me that to take advantage of the scavenging effect that the crossover provides, you'd need a pipe that could handle the entire "puff" of exhaust gas back and forth across it. That's the whole point of the crossover.. to basically help suck the previous explosions gasses down the pipe using the explosion from a cylinder on the opposite side.
It seems to me that you'd need the same diameter pipe as the rest of your exhaust to work correctly. But like I said, I've been wrong lots of times. As matter of fact, the oem crossover pipe is even larger than the down tubes on your headers.. The '78s had a big resonating box on each side in the crossover.
@ Rover.. there's a pretty significant power loss losing the crossover. If you were to throw an OEM exhaust on there after riding with the Harley muffs, you'd be saying "WOW!" Yes, it'll work without the crossover all the way through the RPM range, but it's like the difference between a regular exhaust manifold on a car, then adding headers instead.Last edited by trbig; 09-24-2013, 07:15 AM.Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.
