  • #1 pipe cold

So this morning about a mile from work my bike starts running a bit rough.
It was really cold out, frosty.
Coasted into my parking spot and carefully touched each pipe. #1 was cold,
the other 3 were very hot.
More than likely fuel or fire????
I will check it for spark when it thaws out a bit outside and I get a chance.
Any quirks to look for on the ol' girl? She is an 80 SG with 25k miles on her.

So I went out a few minutes ago after the bike had a chance to cool off.
Switched the #1 & #4 plug wires as I had read on one of the threads.
Bike started at half-choke. Still cold outside.

#1 pipe still cold. Also noticed that #3 wasn't getting hot either.

    HELP!!!

    What is my next step???

Check to see if No. 1 spark plug is fuel fouled. If not, the float valve may be stuck in a closed position not letting fuel into the bowl. The bowl drain might give a clue if this is true. Also, the "choke" pulls fuel from the bottom but if there is no fuel in there, it won't start that cylinder on choke either. If it is fuel fouled, it could be a nmber of things.

#1 plug is fuel fowled. What does that point me to?

If it stayed with #1 then you have a fuel issue. The plug will most likely be foiluled up after not firing like that for awhile so just clean it.

Thanks! I cleaned the plug and it seems to be burning o.k. right now.
I plan on going through the carbs for the first time this winter after I park it.
Hoping to ride for another month yet if the weather in Northern Michigan allows it.

A couple of possibilities: If you left the choke on too long initially, you could have carbon fouled it first to where it wouldn't fire, then it got wet with fuel. Another possibility is that the float was stuck open. I would add that sometimes the coil or plug connector started malfunctioning after things heated-up. I have had that happen before...resistance tested a bit high when cold but got really high after hot.
