  • re: XS1100 Tank

    Hello everyone,

I have been lurking for a little while now. this is a great forum to get help from and for a total newbie to this motorcycle, there is a wealth of information here. i truly appreciate all of the help.

I picked up an 80 xs 1100 that needed some serious work here in Canada. They are rare finds up here. not many around. Fell in love with the bike even though i knew it was going to be a project. and project its turned out to be. i found out afterwards that its had its engine swapped at some point. its got the usual leaks and am currently working on the carbs and the tank. i would not have even messed around with the tank, but the one on it is trashed already...so long story, I picked up the larger tank to fit on my project '80 1100. The 6.3 gallon one. Its pretty beat up so i do not know if I will be able to use it...but before i get to carried away with things, i have a question that im hoping someone on here can answer.

there is what looks to be a vent or a nozzle where maybe a tube connects to at the back of the tank (where the seat sits). what is that nozzle for?

i know? its probably a really simple answer but it isnt on my smaller tank so am wondering what it is? any help greatly appreciated.

anyways, ill let you all know how the project goes as i progress. hopefully ill be able to get it up and running over the winter for riding next year.

It is a drain for water that would otherwise collect in the fill cap area.

Good luck with the project! And welcome!

Welcom! Yeah it is just a drain. Sometimes the tube that connects it to the fill caps recessed area gets damaged and fuel will come out that tube. Of that happened you can just seal the bottom and the top and keep using it.

Probably needless to say, but if it is still intact, it's a good idea to make sure the drain is clear. In my tank, inside the fill area is one of the few places there is significant rust, because the drain was plugged with pine needles.

(Other places where I have surface rust are where there were chips/scratches in the paint, and the underneath saddle part of the tank that never was painted in the first place. Paint touch up is my next project.......)

It's also an overflow drain for gasoline. And, it comes in quite handy as it get's used every so often when I fill-up to the top.

              Hey there Redrab,

I'm pretty sure I mentioned it when I sent you your registration confirmation, but you don't have the needed model description info in your signature and profile. You were just looking for an XS11 when you registered, but now you have one. But we need to know, and so do you, whether you have a Standard or Special. You say the engine has been swapped, so you'll need to use the VIN# on the neck of the frame along with the Vin3/Ser# thread in the MISC forum to verify your year/model style. Then add that to your profile and signature for easier future reference by others replying to tech questions.

The other reason I state this is because you've found the extra large STANDARD tank, yet you had not seen the overfill and water drain pipe. These are on ALL of the standard tanks...which makes me think that you may have gotten a Special bike with the special teardrop tank, which does NOT have the overflow drain pipe!

And so this adds more fun because the special and standard petcocks are different, and do not swap from one to the other. The Specials are plain gravity feed type, and Yamaha used the annoying extra vac. control valve assembly affectionately called the OCTOPUS! The Standard tanks/petcocks are vac. controlled valves, and are required to be connected to the intake manifold synch vac. ports via vac. hoses to function properly. Also the position and angle of the petcocks are different and can interfere or be problematic with regards to fuel line mounting and such.

              Just some FYI's!

                  tank

                  Thanks T.C.

I'll check out the VIN numbers for sure and add to my profile. It did come with the teardrop style tank that you mentioned. I was told that it was just a standard but who knows? As its been called already, a frankenbike! But I love it...so I have to try to get her running back to the way it should be. I do have all the parts for both tanks. Petcocks and all...but if it becomes too much to put on the bigger tank, then I'd just go with the tear drop.

Did ya get two seats? The standard tank goes with the standard seat and visa-versa. One tank will mount shorter than the other.

I also forgot about the fuel level sender! The Special uses just a Thermistor to indicate low level with just a red idiot light in the tachometer gauge, whereas the Standard uses a float and an actual gauge which they have in their dash/gauges. IF you have the Special......round headlight and gauges, leading axle front wheel/forks, then you can SWAP the sender from the special tank to the Standard, but mark which end is UP, and you may have to add some extension wires for it to reach the harness plug.

SO...yes, we would like to know what type/year/model of bike we are talking about. It's okay that it's had a "heart" transplant. Will be important to know whether it came with carbs with the new engine, or if the PO used the original carbs. There ARE differences between the years of carbs, and parts won't swap between them, etc..
