Is that 27mpg from stop & go uglies on local stuff Tamiami Trail / Fruitville Rd etc. -or- blasting at high revs back & forth on I-75?

                MPG Test

Had an opportunity to do a little unscientific MPG testing on a 275 mile ride yesterday. Results were not surprising, but interesting (at least to me). Ride was not the usual mountain near WOT ripper, but somewhat of a spirited rolling hills country ride.

                1. Rode an hour on the interstate (I-85) holding right at 4,900 rpm. That's 75 mph on my 11E. Filled up by the On Ramp (Shell 87 EPA mandated Metro blend) and Topped Off at the Off Ramp (Flying J 87). Got 35.3 mpg for that run.

                2. Next was some slower local highway stuff. Rode the next hour at 3,500rpm to 3,600 rpm. Topped off that tank (Marathon 87) getting 44.6mpg on that run.

                3. Next hour was a very steady at 3,900 rpm which btw gets me 60 mph. That run was 40.9 mpg and topped off again (Raceway 87).

                4. Final run was a mix of narrow country back roads and some two lane highway. A lot of stop signs but rarely got up over 55 mph and a lot was 35-40 mph. So that run was back in the +-3,500 rpm range for an hour or so. After another fillup-topoff I got 43.4mpg. The average for the day was a fairly respectable 41.5mpg on the 87 octane stuff. Guess the moral of the story is (at least for my 11E) that the mpg's ain't bad running up to 60-65mph or maybe 70mph, but as the RPM's increase from say 4,000rpm to 5,000rpm or more the mpg drops like a rock. To complete the test a bit more accurately I needed a good run at steady 5,500rpm to see how much the mpg's drop off between 5,000rpm and 5,500rpm. Beyond that I'd don't need to know since I don't have any road trips planned with Tod, Harry, Greg & John.

Conditions: Tire(s) pressure @ 40psi, brakes not dragging, tires only hitting the pavement, greased wheel bearings, Royal Purple 75W-140 in Mid & FD, Yama20W-50 in motor, 67 degrees, 180lbs of me+stuff, 800ft elev, calm winds, fairing+bags on, rider smiling (a lot).

At the SE Rally I was getting about 39mpg riding in the mountains with only a little of the steady high rpm freeway stuff. Since I usually ride in the mountains and get 37-38-39mpg it is surprising to get something above 40-41. In any case, a pretty day and a fun ride ..............

That's part of my mileage issue. At 75 mph, I'm turning 5,500 rpm.

That's the difference between the 17" wheel on the Standard and the 16" wheel on the special. With the FD conversion on the Special the RPMs are exactly the same as the Standard.

After 1st gear it really doesn't make a difference. You've ridden with me before Marty, my SG has the conversion. You just need to run in 1 gear lower than you did with the stock FD and on the highway you have "OVERDRIVE"

I find that I get my best gas mileage when I am behind a Hogsley Ferguson - about 3 more MPG than normal. LOL

Greg, what MPG do you get with the 750/850 FD compared to the OEM FD?

                              Hi Mike,
drafting, eh? being sucked along by a Hogliegh Poodleson with a fat guy riding it?
You'll get better mileage yet if you draft behind a semi but be careful, a semi got better brakes than a H-D.

Mike I think your decreased fuel consumption is less dependent on the draft and more dependent on the stately speed with which most HDs run
