  • RUnning Rich?

He guys, I just got my 1981 Yamaha XJ 650 running (XS1100 is this winters project) and I seem to be using a lot of gas, about 15 MPG and the bike sputters abit in the low RPMs..... I buddy told me it might be running rich....I know this is too much gas to air ratio, but does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks Eddie

Check your plugs. If you are running really rich, they should tell you.

      Jetting

Wow 15 mpg, thats terrible, my rd's get better than that.
I am surprised that you say it generally"runs ok"
The first thing would do is take a look at the spark plugs.
Black and sooty? Rich...tan/ chocolate brown ...where you want to be.
Gray'.. pieces of piston ..Stop running it.
White ...lean ...be very careful running it
Of course these should be checked at different throttle openings.
Clean or use new plugs at each check.
I would guess that somewhere here, there is a post to give you general
jetting ideas.Or your could contact local dealer.
At a minimum I would also take a look at your air filters.
Remember the more info you share the more easily it might be diagnosed by proxy

If you are only getting 15 MPG, you may not be running on all cylinders. Check the exhaust header pipes to see if they are all getting hot.
