  • 1st Gear Coming Out Again After Fix

So I posted a little while ago about having "fixed" my 1st gear issue and now it seems as though its come back again, granted not as bad. It'll slip out for a second and then catch again at about 3500-4000 rpms. I thought I did a good job under cutting it but I'm concerned it might be something else now. Any ideas/suggestions?

Also, if anyone has spare gears or a transmission lying around send me a PM, I'm looking to buy.
78 E - 2to1 exhaust, dynatek coils, special headlight [SOLD!]
79 F - gas tank refurb, headgasket change, straight pipes, late model carbs, virago lowering shocks, special headlight and gauges, TC fuse block, GSXR-1100 carbs (WIP)

Did you cut the slots on the engaging wheel?

You need to dovetail the dogs and lands so they pull themselves together. Look at 4th gear and you'll see what I mean. If they had done that from the git-go there would probably never been a problem.

As Greg stated, angle grind the slots on the gears on the LOAD side only to match the angle grinds on the dogs. Precision is not totally necessary, but try to grind the same amout on each load side of slots so load is fairly equal on all slots and dogs under load. Doing this on mine keeps them engaged to the point that at times, downshifting from second to first, I have to blip the throttle a little more than normal to rotate the load off of dog/slot to get it to release in order to downshift. This fix has worked now for almost six years with an initial hammering speed shifts at the local dragstrip to make sure it was a 'make or break' repair job.

          Hey there Downshift,

Did you see the Dremel 1st and 2nd gear fix tip??

Here's an excerpt diagram for the 1st/4th gears grinding. Click on it to enlarge to be able to read the text easier.

SO....sorry but you're looking at another trip into the tranny, but you don't really need a new or different set of gears, just need to be a bit more aggressive on the grinding of the ones you have. If you didn't, would also suggest working on the 2nd/5th gears dogs/slots while you're in there again.
