  • Engine Guards

I just ran into these on Ebay. They aren't cheap but they look very nice.
Looks like you would look a long time to do better.

Thought it might help out to post it here.

Well, they are "purdy", but regrettably they are still just 2 point types, and I can see them bending into the engine cases anyways. JMHO.

Anybody got a picture of what the 3 point type looks like and how they bolt on?

Have to dissagree in this case. The way their webbed at cross-over, likely do mount or down frame damage first. Just an opnion from a certified welder/fabricator, and not worth $.02 to some I imagine.

motoman, you are right that the main portion of the bars won't bent.

it's the mounting "tabs" that bent next to the frame, i've had to straighten several of the 2 point mounted bars..

the 3 point are much better crash protection.

3 point is a solid fundamental of structural integrity.

......exactly, load stresses are spread to an additional mount point. Have to say though, those ARE some nice lookin two point crash guards! Definitely some thought went into their strucual design compared to the stock ones that came new on my Venturer.

I can tell you that even with the 3-point guards, if you dump the bike at say 35-40 mph, the guards will bend. AND if you have highway pegs, they will hole into the engine covers. So, for tipovers, it really does not matter if you use 3-point or 2-point guards. Somewhere in between it may matter. I once looked inside the crankcase of a Kaw that went down in Pouder Canyon, CO, that had no case guards (must have wiped-out the engine covers). I would buy those if I needed a set even if they are 2-point. I also use the highway pags, but I wonder if they would mount to those where I would need them...

The three-point guards, though I think they look better, were only available on the '78. It was found that the three-point DIDN'T protect. When they fold back, they broke the covers and many times, cases. The two point protectors bend back fairly easily and lay over the covers and take the asphalt grinding, and tend to protect much better than the three-point guards.

That middle bar on the three-point guards is the main culprit. It hits the front of the covers before the rest of the bar can when it folds from a layover, and all that pressure pushes from front to back on your cover, breaking it, and many times the case where the bolts go in for the cover and get ripped out sideways... instead of pushing in towards the engine in the case of the two point guards.

Always kinda wondered if the two point guards would better save the case covers. I'm sure you would know better than anyone from experience. My 11 has never been down, cept for the past occassiona embarrasingl slow-mo tip-over stopped. I'm afraid if I ever went down again at speed(the ST at 50mph avoiding a t-bone), and survived to remember it, I'd be done with scoots. Odds would NOT be in favor I'm afraid. Once WAS enough.

Well, it seems like a REDESIGN is in order for the 3 point style guards so that they would NOT fold/bend on impact!? For years I've wondered about trying to make some....sounds like a good winter project.

Those are indeed nice looking guards. They are a little pricey. I found a nice set on ebay for $40 that I was able to clean up with steel wool and metal polish. It took a while to find them but the price was something I could afford.
