??? So not quite understanding I guess. You got 9,000 miles out of a 712, had no problems with it of any kind, abondoned it for a 777, then swore off Shinko all together because of that tire, then went back to a tire that you won't get near the mileage out of that costs almost $30 more than the 712?

I have Shinko 712, and so far so good..I was told that new tires are shipped with some kind of coating, which makes them pretty slippery when wet, which wears off after a few hundred miles...maybe you need to ride them little harder to wear them off quickerNick

Mineral spirits will take the mold release compound off, I always soak a rag and thoroughly wipe off any new tire before putting it on the road.2H7 (79) owned since '89

You're supposed to take it easy on a tire for the first 100 miles.. no hard accel or decel.

-D404 on the front of my 80SG has barely 8000 miles on it and is about done by tread depth measurement (2mm). This is the cheapest tire in their line up and was the only reason I chose it when I got the bike, before I knew about available tires for the XS.
-Shinko 712's on front and rear of my 550 Nighthawk never had any problems in any weather. Sold the bike, never got to run a set from start to finish.
-Shinko 230 Tourmaster on the front of my 80G has 2000 miles on it and doesn't show any wear, I have been measuring tread depth since new.
-Shinko 009 Raven on the front of my ZRX1200 has 12,000 miles and 2mm more tread left than the D404 on the 80SG.
-Shinko 009 Raven on the rear of the ZRX went 10,800 miles, almost to wear bars. Replaced with Shinko 011 Verge, at the 2500 mile mark there is 6mm of tread, down from 7.5mm when new.
None of them need more than a small amount of weight to balance, and are all very good in the wet. Even get caught out in early snow in Colorado a few times and they get me home in the slush.
I always take it easy when it rains, especially that the first period of rain (especially if I lived where it doesnt rain a lot!) where ALL the oil and grease is lifted up out of the pavement. Downpours are great for roads as things get washed off quickly, so wouldnt expect issues there, other than real hydro planing, and any tire will do that.
To be fair, I have not tried a Shinko 777 front or rear.
Send me any Shinko tires you don't want anymore, I'll pay for shipping and give them a fair run on one of my XS's for comparison to your experience.Last edited by Bonz; 09-07-2013, 08:22 AM.Howard

Motoman, what's got you confused? Sharing all my Shinko tire experiences that have had no issues in any weather. I monitor treadlife for grins so i can give useless trivia to you guys, and Experience shows how the D404 while a good tire in terms of performance on the bike, sucks for wear and costs a whole lot more than it is worth based on that.
Also following up on what was said about it not raining much in Arizona, thus any rain must lift a lot of crap up off the road and take a long time to wash away, leading to a false conclusion that the tire in question may be the root cause.
In regards to the downpour statement, that was in reference to the mentioning of riding in a downpour in a part of the country that sees regular rain, with no issues of tire performance with his new tires, and I am saying any oil, grease on the road would be minimal after a short period of time, and any tires would do well relative to when the Shinko tires slipped or whatever they did.
Finally, I have not tried the specific tire that started this thread, and wanted to say if they are not gonna be used, send them my way and I'll give them a try on one of my XS's and report back.
Still scratching your head?Last edited by Bonz; 09-08-2013, 08:37 AM.Howard

I know Motoman, just livin' the dream here on the front range!
My wife and I took a nice ride on the project 80G yesterday, good riding bike two up!
Gonna take the ZRX for a ride here in a little bit. Put a fork brace and new bars on it recently, transformed the handling, feel and comfort. Feels even more "right" than it did before.
Now looking for a fork brace for the G and SG, amazing improvement on the ZRX.Howard

Definitely see where getting a scoot to fit you right can be a bit dicey with your stature being up there in the nose-bleed section!81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.
