Hey, question for the collective.
There's a nice 81 MNS on Craigslist in northern Colorado. Been emailing the guy, and he says the bike "has a first gear issue" which is just as common as the "second gear issue". He says it has both the first gear and second gear issues.
I called him on it and said I had never heard of a first gear issue. See his email below... http://fortcollins.craigslist.org/mcy/4001425493.html
"Welp..! I have had seven of these bikes three had second gear problems and two, counting this one, has the first gear problem.. Hearing about gear problems and actually experiencing them are two very different things.. Like I said, I took the gears out of my parts bike and yes it was a pain, then again, I am not a professional motorcycle mechanic.. The fact is you can have a first gear problem w/out having a second gear problem and the other way round..! I believe four years of riding it with this problem undoubtedly proves my point..! I got the parts bike for $300 and parted it out for $1600 and still have the two sets of gears, new tires, starter, frame w/title, bearing for steering column, 160 mph speedometer/tac asm, and a box full of small stuff left..!
No matter one way or another it needs fixing to bring it to the point of an exceptional bike, that is quite true..! This is exactly why I am asking such a low price for such an exceptionally nice bike..! Even-tho I have owned over thirty motorcycles, not counting a half dozen dirt bikes., I still like this one the best, even with the gear problem.. I have acquired eight collector vehicles and because of this, no time, or a enclosed place to keep it at this time..
High book on these as you may know is over $4500.! If it didn't have the gear problem I would be asking $5k just because it is actually rare and otherwise in exceptional condition.!
I know I could part it out for $2000 (not that I would), as I have done that with other similar XS11's that were nowhere in the great shape of this one.. I have done this several times., so I am not just guessing or speculating.. Parts for these, again as you may know, are expensive, getting rare and they don't make them anymore.. Last time I checked complete set of new gears, go for about $800..! If you can find them..?
Actually "no matter how you slice it," it is worth what I am asking without the extra parts offered in the deal.. If it doesn't sell within a month, before the weather changes, it is no big deal.. I'll just put the $500 into it next Spring and get out of it what I know it is worth., unless I end up doing a bit more ridding..? I just didn't want to store it outside and finding a place inside hasn't worked out an why it is on CL...
I guess I am wondering why someone would spend so much time on this, that already has "a couple XS11's," (very nice one in the photo by the way), knowing they couldn't even come look at it in the first place...??
Anyway, good luck to you also, in whatever it is you are actually looking for., and have a wonderful day.! Keep those XS11's on the road... "
So, other than wishful thinking (IMO) of what it's worth, back to the question of have you guys heard of a first gear issue that no one seems to post about on this forum?
