    Hi XSers !

Just taking a look at the shift pawl and shift shaft, if I push on the shift shaft it moves towards the case and barely engages the shift pawl. Is this normal, what if anything should hold it in even contact with the shift pawl ?

    This is aligned

This is with the shift shaft pushed in

    I just noticed the star ? ? ?

    Thank You Guys ! Done

I can't tell how much, but I have two bikes and the shift shaft moves in and out. I believe it moves about the same as your's.

Hard to tell from pic, but if the shift fork shaft moves in and out, may wanna pull clutch cover and have a look at shaft end on other side. There is a snap ring that holds the oil pump idler gear on this shaft and also behind that and indexing roll pin that holds shaft stationary and a snap ring. The second or first gear not staying engaged WILL eventually knock off one or both those snap rings on clutch side, leaving oil pump idler gear dancing around in that somewhat captured area behind clutch basket.....DAMHIK.
