On the road again.....until one thing leads to another. I quit.

So I sold my 850. I took a little of that money and a little motivation and put my 1100 back together. There wasnt a lot to do to it. A quick re-clean on the carbs and synced them one more time. filled up all the fluids. I put the bars and controls on fixed a few little electrical things and got all the lights working right.

A few little zips up and down the street for a few tests. The brakes needed a little love. I got every thing all together except the back brakes and felt confident that I could take it for a little ride. The power was smooth and there was plenty of it. That was the first time I really rode an 1100.

It was all good till it happend.

I had went 5 or 10 miles tops. sitting at a light in first with the clutch pulled in it made a shrill noise and shut off. I got off kept the clutch pulled in and rolled it up on the side walk. It started right back up but sounds like pebbles on the right side of the engine. and I had to give it a little more then normal gas to keep it running it seemed when I first restarted it. I babied it home. I really dont want to pull it back apart after just getting it ride able again.

so frustrating! I quit XS1100 for sale!

Sorry to hear; I know how frustrating that can be! I suggest you at least try to figure out what the issue is and then figure out what to do from there. You probably have a shorter "ride" ahead of you to having a reliable bike than myself. I have to address many of the things which you mentioned - one more cleaning on the carbs, some electrical stuff, and brakes. Good luck!

Ok so maybe i won't quite quit on this bike. I found out what the problem was. The bolt that holds in the pinion shaft backed out and was being ate by the gear on the back of the clutch basket. The case is a little marked up but should be o and the gear on the basket looks fine.

You are not the first to have that happen. More than a few folks have started putting loc-tite on that bolt.

Anyone know if the bolt from a 750xs would fit?

Also, you did put the special Washer behind it and ensured that it was centered around the lip of the bolt before torquing it down?? Yep, Locktite will be your friend.
