  • Now I know why

The kid I bought the SH from was nice enough to deliver it. I thought it was because it needed a rear caliper ( thanks Adreas ! ). Turns out now with the new/used caliper on the trans just makes a clacking noise in 1st & 2nd on the center stand when the rear brake is applied even just lightly. So into the trans I go. Thing is it seems to take so little pressure to make these gears jump I can't see that there could possibly enough meat left on those dogs or slots to do the dremel fix.
Anyone have some old trans parts or a set of gears that are either fixable or good ?

    Thanks ! Done };~)

you may want to put the tire on the pavement and see how the tranny is under normal driving.

You will need to look at it to see how bad it is. For second gear, the washer swap makes a big difference as well as the grinding.

You might be surprised how bad they can be and still be fixable. You might also be surprised how little damage it can take for it to act as bad as you describe it.

          Hey there Done,

Several years ago a fellow with an XJ had the 1st gear skipping so bad it sounded like a machine gun on anything other than IDLE!

I used a cutoff wheel to remove enough DOG to be able to get it back to a nice flat sharp corner with the undercut angle. IT worked just fine when put all back together..these gears are well overengineered and are very strong...so a mm or so removed won't hurt them.

This is an old thread I started and my woes with the tranny. I bet yours sounds similar to this . It is easily fixable doing the fix recommended on this site. I did it and my bike shifts nicely and has had no issues yet but I have not very many miles on it yet either.
Check out the link, one pic on there is a vid of how it sounded and ran.

              star OK

              Thanks Tarzan !

Took a pic but it's so blurry it can't be seen, but it's fine. Looked at all the others fixes and will commence tear down to see what the gears/dogs/slots look like.
              Thank You and everyone !!!!

Did a 67 Cuda trans when I was in my 20's and all I needed was six stitches, LOL
