  • my bike also shut off while riding

Hi guys, driving on the highway today I felt the bike shudder a couple times (like it lost ALL spark) kept driving and pretty soon the whole bike shut off and I had to pull over. starter button wouldn't work but my dash and headlights were still on. i played around for a minute turning the key on and off and the run stop on and off, took the kickstarter out and gave it a few kicks, it didnt start but pretty soon the starter button worked again, it started up and I drove home without missing a beat.

intermittent electrical problems are not my speciality any ideas where to begin?

Get yourself a can of DeOxit, contact cleaner of your choice of brands, and a tube of dielectric grease. Start at the headlight bucket flush out the connectors first with the contact cleaner, then hit them with the deoxit, and plug and unplug the connectors a few times during the deoxit cleaning (it may take a couple rounds with the deoxit). After the contacts look clean flush the connector again with regular contact cleaner and then grease the connectors up good and plug them back together. Then move to the next connector and repeat till you have done every connector on the bike.

Now open up the right hand handlebar cluster and do the same in there. Now do the left one.

Sounds like the kill switch on the right handlebar. It may be dirty or broken inside.

i cleaned the connectors under the headlight bucket last season but I'll give them another going over soon. i did just get a few mins to clean the ones behind the fuse panel and they were fairly dirty. when i fired it up afterward it seems like it loses 2 cyl when i shift it out of neutral. is there a specific connection i should check for this problem?

          Hey Kev,

Yes, the Pick Up Coil wires themselves under the left hand crank cover, not necessarily the connection, but the wires themselves...see the TECH TIP for info, diagnostic technique and repair, photos too!
