  • It's Alive!!

I put the newly rebuilt carbs on and did some quickie fuel line connections.
Here's a video of it starting and running. (it had been warmed up a bit already)
I set the floats, bench synced, and set the screws 2 turns out. After I figure out the hose layout and connect with the correct hoses, inline filters, and octy, I'll attempt to do a running sync with a home-made manometer which I have yet to build.
Anyway, how's it sound? Any observations?

I guess you know the idle is too high. The red oil/break light is on. I think it comes on when a taillight is out(?). Mine comes on everynow and then and goes off but I don't know why. My oil is where it is supposed to be and all my lights work. Glad you got it running. You'll really enjoy it. Why do you have that meter? Is that for the charging system, to see how well you charging or how much power you are using?

Yes, I know the idle is high. I'll get that sorted out when I start tuning.
I hope the indicator lights go away when I reconnect the fairing, change the oil, and check all the lights. So that amp meter isn't stock? It was there when I got the bike. I ran her with jumper cables and a car battery today so i will pay some attention to that meter when I put a new battery in.
Today was the first time I have had it running so I was a little stoked! Probably the first time anybody has had it running in 6 years going by the '07 license plate tags.
So how did it sound? Did the throttle response seem good?

        tuning

The throttle response is not too bad for bench syc'd only. Motor sounds good from that mike position. Tune it and drive it for a couple hundred miles, then check your plugs. They will tell you how each cylinder is running.
        Good job

It does need a running synch, notice how the RPMS go down kind of slowly.

As for the oil light not going off, definitely check the tail light and see whats up. I helped an XSive put a used engine in his bike some years ago, and the oil light would not go off. We changed oil pumps, still no pressure. Turned out the oil pump idler gear was laying in the clutch pan, and had been chewed on pretty good by the other stuff in there. Got the one form his old engine, and oil pressure was fine.

But it sounds very nice for en engine that has not been used in six years.

Definately run it some miles before making mixture changes or synching. The compression needs to "wear in" if it has been sitting for years.

Ummm, no, sync it now before you start riding it. Set the idle mix. Ride it, then redo it.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll post here with any updates/new questions.
Is this oil pressure gauge stock?

No, the XS11 never had an oil pressure gauge from the factory. Looks like someone tapped into the monitoring spot for your oil pressure switch and piped a gauge out.

I guess a better question would be, does anyone have any suggestions on a clear plastic lense for this oil gauge? It is 2-1/8" in diameter. The one on there is missing a chunk. It screws on like a lid on a jar, but I could silicone a new one on if it didn't have threads. Or maybe a crome trim ring and a flat glass lense?
Any sources for stuff like that?

man, the PO has all kinds of gadgets on there. Would a oil pressure gauge read right there? I no nothing about something like that, just wondering if it would work right. I need to synch mine too, I just have a bench synch but it still runs good.

It should. That passage there comes right off the stock oil pressure sensor area.

As to the new plastic face. It looks like any other 2" gauge face and should be easy to find a replacement.
