  • Lo-Buck Rust Removal

I've run into yet another rust removal method, but don't laugh.....

Molasses! Yep, it seems that the proper mix with water will eat rust off steel without harming anything else. Mixed at 7 parts water/1 part molasses, simply submerge your part in the mix and leave it until it's clean enough to suit you. Warming the mixture will help but not absolutely needed. Depending on how rusty the part is and how fresh the mixture is, anywhere from a few days to several weeks may be needed. A cheap source for molasses is from a feed store, ask for 'feed molasses'. A thorough rinsing after removing is needed (a pressure washer works well), and then a fogging with WD40 to stop flash rust.

I haven't done it personally, but have seen it demonstrated and it does work! One guy picked up a old hottub (one of those big ones!) and is using it to dip fenders and other large items. The only limit is how big a container you have.

And when you're done, it's entirely biodegradable.... spray it on your lawn or garden for fertilizer....

Several years ago there was discussion on the XS650 list about derusting the fuel tank with molasses. I expect anything acidic will do the trick. Once upon a time, I tried to save a six-pack of Pepsi. I think the cans commemorated some event I attended. Anyway, before a couple of years passed, the Pepsi leaked out. It ate the aluminum.

Here's one about removing corrosion with Marvel Mystery Oil.

Did I find that one on here? I tried it and it certainly helps the ugly situation.

          Hi Marty,
I was part of that discussion. Some things I found out when I tried the process:-
          1) Yes, it works great.
          2) It takes some few weeks to fully de-rust stuff.
          3) After a while the molasses mix goes bad and smells real nasty. Nasty enough to make a maggot gag.
