    Shock ID

    I got this set of Fox Shox from another member when he was getting rid of all his XS stuff. He said he took them off a parts bike that he had and never used them. I am trying to figure out a part number or some sort of ID on them so I can figure out the specs and if they are rebuildable (I am guessing they are since there is a warning about releasing the pressure before disassembly). Only numbers I can find are hand stamped on the bolt eyelets and that says:

    8 4
    S 1

    I don't know if this info is pertinent but I have Works Performance shocks on my '80 special. p.o. installed them back in the mid 80's. cost about $600 when new. today WP wants $200 to rebuild them. why spend that kind of money on 30 year old shocks when I can buy brand new Hagons for $200?
    just sayin'...

      Got a response from Fox and they said basically,

      Huh that's weird don't know what that is. We made a Harley and Victory shock in the 90's but that is not one of those.

      So yeah, Fox was no help.

        could someone have put that Fox sticker on there? I bet the would be good if they are in working order.

          I've seen those shocks before, Chris (Yamahansolo) has those on his F, I always thought he had them mounted upside down but that is the way they go as in the picture. As for rebuildability, I would say no.

            I don't think they need to be rebuilt, there are no leaks, I was more just thinking in the future.

            Fox also suggested the "maybe someone put the sticker on there" as well, but this sticker is the warning sticker and brand sticker in one. It isn't really a cheap sticker that someone gets either is is a pretty heavy duty and thick sticker.

                  Alright after harassing the Fox guy a few more times I got this:

                  These are very old original Fox Shox we produced for dirtbike applications back in the late 70’s to early 80’s. We no longer rebuild these but you can follow the link below to our Dealer Thor Lawson Suspension who can service these and actually has some parts available for them, also included is a manual which might help you out.

                  He also included a PDF manual for the shocks, And then he proceded to try and sell me some $1000 shocks....

                    Yes they are old fox shocks like mine. They "were" rebuildable but they don't sell parts for them. Maybe check old bike barn. Mine still work great. Got 25mm of sag.

                      If those are fox air shocks you have to release the pressure on one end of the shock first(cant remember which end ,sorry)or it will blow the seals which are almost impossible to find .I had them on a C&J framed xr 500 and they worked great.good luck with them
