xs1100 venturer starter problem

First, I would try flushing out the oil with some MMO/tranny fluid or seafoam, the starter clutch can get gummed up and slip. Don't run the engine under any load with the thinned oil though. If the starter clutch does end up needing to be replaced, it can be had from PartsNMore, but the engine cases will need to be split for replacement. The problem could also be running too thick of an oil or a bad starter connection possibly.Last edited by bikerphil; 07-25-2013, 09:42 PM.2H7 (79) owned since '89

Synthetic oil has been known to do that too. Mine also slips a bit when I am due a new battery.....like now Clean up the electrical connections and change the engine oil before ordering new parts ( I think BikerPhil already said that )

Sorry, but it sounds like a starter clutch problem. That means engine removal and case splitting to repair.Greg

try the seafoam thing first. It may save you the hassle of major repairs. Really, the starter clutch slipping is VERY common in cold weather. It can sound a bit like a wounded duck (honking noise), just make a whirling sound, or make a clacking sound. All three of my xs11's have done this before without causing long term damage.Skids (Sid Hansen)
