  • Valve cover gasket and rubber things

I have a small oil leak at the valve cover. I plan on taking the valve cover off and replacing the gasket - and checking clearances while I have it off. I was wondering if anyone knew where I can get a new gasket instead of from my Yamaha dealer (he wants $40 and will take 6 weeks). I called JC Whitney but they didn't have them.

Also, I want to replace the 4 rubber 1/2 moon things that are located under the gasket (don't know the name). Oil seems to be leaking from around one of them.

Partsnmore.com should have both of these and for quite a bit less than your dealer. The valve cover gasket is going for $8 and the half moons are $2 a peice. Just follow the following link:

      There they are

      Thanks, D.P.

Looks like the rubber things are called cam shaft plugs...learn something everyday.

Has anyone used the gasket seal? I've heard about the pam spray trick so I don't think you would use a gasket seal with the pam spray.

Does that Valve Cover Gasket fit the XJ 1100. I need one as well and it wasn't listed in the partsnmore page.

I just fixed my leaky valve cover this past weekend.
I found the gasket to be in fine shape, so I just replaced the two cam plugs, and re-sealed the original gasket.
I used a gasket sealer that purchased from an engine builder that I know. It is a special sealer that is used by Porche. It stays soft, so is supposed to be easier to clean off the next time that you have to go in there.
What a treat to ride on the freeway and not get oil splatter on my right shin!!
