I used Blue Away and then followed up with SemiChrome polish. Blue Away is thick liquid and SemiChrome is a tube of paste. Worked great! Header pipes are still a little yellow/gold, but before were dark blue/purple. Found best deal on both purchased together on Amazon. Less that $25. Use sparingly, they will last.

          Hi Jeff,
rust doesn't measure the pipe's temperature, it measures the ambient humidity.
However, if you sand the rust off the shiny pipe underneath will indeed show pipe temperature just like on Marty's helpful color chart. Until the pipe rusts.

            Welcome

            Welcome tn11 !

How long would you say you spent on the pipes ?
Were they at all rusted/pitted ?
Were they stock double walled or after market ?
            Thank You ! Done };~)

              Another Method

You could always take the pipes off and have them coated by the shops that coat headers. Jethot Coatings is one of the more popular ones. They can coat inside and out. When you have this done, no more bluing occurs. I had some headers done 5-6 years ago and they look just as good now as when they were done initially. Not necessarily cheap, but really look great.

Not to sound like a confused young hot shot here, but IMO I think the bluing actually adds a bit of flare to the headers. Makes them look cool dare I say? A lot of people pay good money for headers/mufflers/tips that come pre-blued for cars and trucks and bikes and any other thing you can think of with wheels.

Many Harley guys like it because it shows they actually ride the thing instead of just a trailer queen.
