Can you go into more detail on what you had to do for them to fit? I haven't bought any yet but have been looking to do this same upgrade on my XJ.
I THINK your XJ pipes have removable mufflers you can just undo the clamp with? Mine being XS pipes I had to weld on an extension pipe to fit the mufflers with. I used 1.5" pipe and welded a piece total length of about 5" on the end of the collector right after the weld that the muffler is at. I jammed a bit of the pipe in the end of the collector and welded it in a straight line back. If I was to do it again, I'd do a bit of an angle up so the pipes angle up towards the back. I then bought the EMGO exhaust adapters you can get anywhere off ebay or a shop and bolted the mufflers up to it. The mufflers are from a 1997 HD Sportster. I used the exisiting mounting spot on the bike and made up a piece of aluminum bar down to the mounting hole on the muffler. I used an aircraft clamp to tighten my mufflers on, but if I did it again, I'd use stock HD muffler clamps for a nicer look. Hope that helps you Austen! If you need more info, pics etc, just email me courtneyhook@shaw.ca
Bone stock 1980 Special except for the exhaust and crashbars. Oh yeah, and the scabbard for the Winchester Defender.

No Denny, the collectors get cut off before the crossover, and the Sportster mufflers don't have any crossover of course. Worked out quite well, and the noise is comparable to stock as far as I can tell. Actually sounds a little nicer I think. Again if you want pics, I can send you some closeups.

Looks great. I used a similar set of Harley mufflers on my XS1100H and it worked out well.
