What is the best way to tape off the edge of the rim where is is unpainted? I am having issues taping this rim and I need to get it done quick so I can swap tires since my current tire is running out of tread....

It'll be tough to get a nice straight edge, but you can smear a little grease or vaseline on the parts you don't want painted. Otherwise... masking tape (The blue painters masking tape is best) and a razor blade... and time.Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

I've done a 'quicky' mask job, then before the paint dries all the way came back with a rag and some solvent and 'cleaned up' the edges. You need to be a bit careful, but no matter how carefully you mask you never get the edge perfect.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Dang it, these are not the answers I wanted....
Steve, you still never did tell me how many hours you have into those polished rims with the center ridge removed. The rim I am painting is a 16" rim that I removed the ridge on. Going to paint it yellow inside the spokes and then reverything else that normally is black will still be black.Nathan

Painted rims
Hi Nate !
Spray the rim, don't bother to mask, then clean what you don't want painted with a rag and carb cleaner before it dries. Make dang sure the rim is clean as some I've done came out great, some reacted with left over wax/oil and looked like hell, had to re-do. One of the tricks to doing this just in case of wax/oil is to dust them with paint ( light coat ) then give it some time and do the same and again dust, see any reactions clean and dust that section again until it comes out well. Then on to heavier coats till you have it as you like. Take some time between coats, let it almost dry.

If you are gonna do it then take the time and do it right! Otherwise you will be kicking yourself since the wheels are big things that you see every time you get on.
Get a roll of QUALITY 1/8" or 3/16" wide stripping tape (the kind the painters use to outline flames) and circle the rim at the edge of the shiny spot. You can work that tape around the curve very easily. Then use larger tape to finish the masking job. You can also use that tape to mask the open spot on the spokes if you don't want to paint over those. Yeah, it takes a few minutes per side but the time is worth it.
Oh, another thing. If you are going to polish the edge of your rims on a buffing wheel, do that first and then clean every trace of the compound off with wax & grease remover.
I did mine with Duplicolor wheel paint rattle cans several years ago and they still look the very good. I also recommend you cover your color coat with some clear.
While some guys do OK with the Vaseline thing, I believe a good masking job with the correct material will produce a better, longer lasting job.

One other trick some painters use is to put a coat of clear on first where the edge of the tape meets the area to be painted. The object being that the clear seals the edge of the tape, so that the color paint doesn't run under the tiny crevices at the edge of the tape.
Try not to build up too thick a coat of paint where the edge of the tape is, since it is more apt to chip when you pull the tape.
If you are going to clear coat the color, you have clear coat. If not, it might not be worth the price of the clear coat.

I would agree on the thin pinstripe tape. Honestly if it were me, I'd paint it all and sand down the flat edges. Use a amazing block to keep it flat and go lrogressively finer grits. I've don't that on the fins on jugs and heads on other bikes and its turned out pretty good.80 SG Cafe~in Progress
