  • Clutch loose

Hey my clutch lets off and just revvs up while in gear at about 4k rpm so i was wondering about which replacement springs to get to see if that fixes my problems. Also, is there somewhere that would have a step by step on how to do replace the springs? Is it difficult? I searched a little and found the Barnett spring kit is a good one, if so does anyone want to sell me one! ha thanks

Go to the main forum page and scroll down to the Repair section and click on Engine. TopCat created a post called "Clutch Plates Replacement and Extra Steel" which has the best step by step pictorial on how to disassemble and reassemble your clutch.

Most everyone seems to recommend buying the heavy duty (HD) Barnett clutch springs. It cures most clutch slip issues. You should measure your friction plates to check correct thickness. If they are below spec get some new ones. I bought a set from Parts-N-More for $40 delivered and they have been working great, have +20K miles on them. Some people have added an extra steel plate in their clutch to get more spring pressure on the clutch pack but that is a band-aid IMO. New HD springs typically cure all.

Teach a man to fish comes to mine...

Seems like a lot of people dont even know the repair/maintenance/modification tips exist and we are nice guys and cut and paste links directly to the material for them. At least he attempted a search, Kudos on that. Maybe someone in the future will read this and check that section of the forum.

          Hi Wade,
in a partial defence of those guys, sometimes it's easier to ask than to find where they've hidden it.
          For instance:-
Suppose some weirdo wants to attach a sidecar, would he think to look in Modifications/Wheels and Suspension
          to find the information?
Nah, not seeing anything that even mentioned a sidecar, he'd give up looking and ask.

I always use the search but always get a zillion posts to go through. I usually find what I am looking for though. Ok, to the clutch. Mine would slip up high rpms in 3rd so I bought the Barnett springs. I am not sure if I got the HD springs or not but that fixed it. Not matter how hard I hammer on it, it still holds. I probably should have sanded my steels and cleaned the frictions but I was too lazy to go that far. And since I only slipped in high rpms, I figured the springs would do the trick and they did. Good luck.
