Good deal! Even though I can't remember to put the hoses on the correct vacuum nipples, at least I could remember when I didn't do it right! Let us know if that fixes it.

It is really wet up here too. we sure need the moisture though.

Ah, but you have a garage and I do not! Haha. I imagine that should solve my weird sound problem and I also have that oil filter cover on order from ebay.

Good job, your bike is coming along nicely and should be a great runner for years to come.

          Bonz, natemoen,

The clicking was indeed caused by those two lines being switched. I put them on their appropriate connectors and wala, no more weird noise!

Glad that took care of it.

Post up here what you pm'd me about the sluggishness when starting out (then picks up) and at each gear change as well?

I gather this didn't happen on the initial ride home, correct?

Did the idle adjust up fine?

Could water from rain have gotten into the tank? Did you put gas in it (or keep riding to beat the rain) as it was pretty light on gas when you left my place, and it could be getting ready to hit reserve? Just some initial thoughts...

Here is the PM:no more clicking noise after I swapped those two lines. However, the bike is feeling extremely sluggish for some reason. When I put the bike into gear and open up the throttle it does a slow almost lurch and then picks up, until I hit the next gear. Could this be a carb adjustment?

I would feel extremely dumb if I just needed to switch to res and hit the gas station. Lets go ahead and table this problem until I get gas, haha.

Looks like the lurching was an idle problem. On my ride to work today I noticed I was idling REALL high, probably because I was trying to adjust it to accomodate those two lines being switched. Im going to bring it back down and see how it runs.

Possibly the "slow lurch" was more like the clutch being slipped to get going with the high idle, then it would take off when fully engaged. Same thing on each upshift when you'd let the clutch, the higher rpm idle made the clutch "slip" as the engine speed matched road speed.

I'm dying to know if the bike runs better than before we did the carbs. I have to think you've goosed it a few times at least, how does it feel?

It picked up fantastically on the interstate when I rode to work this morning. Especially in the higher gears. I can give a much more accurate assesment once I fix these small little issues.
You know, since you've been helping me a ton on this Howard, you'll have to take it for a spin as well. Let me know how it runs in comparison to your two XS's.

Thanks for swinging by my work at lunch! Good to see the bike running well.

I know we talked about it, but for the sake of the thread and information... After riding your bike the issue you talked about and the "lurch" is just the idle being high off the line and it doesn't drop very much when shifting, so you get that feeling you describe when the clutch is let back out.

Let us know if dropping the idle takes care of it, I think it should.

Yep, I adjusted the idle back down and solved that problem.

Now I want to hear that it almost tore the grips off
My 79 when newer almost threw me a number of times, I was in my late 20s and was able to hang on.
                            Glad they de-tuned them later.
At 60 now I don't know if I could still hang on.

Well, his grips aren't on that tight if I recall, and it may well rip them right off the bars!
