In cleaning out the front calipers on my XJ, I noticed neither of them have the dust covers and retaining clips for around the brake piston. OEM piston kits are available for $96 each including new pistons, my pistons are fine. I sent Andreas a PM but was wondering if new boots/clips are available someplace? Thanks and have a good holiday weekend. Billy

Do some online searches. You should be able to find just the rebuild kits without the piston. Try MikesXS.com and look at Part #29-0016. Probably what you need.Mike Giroir

Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.

Best way to find a part you need is to find the part number on a parts fiche. I like to use www.CMSNL.com, there are others as well. Once you find the part number, google it. Sources that sell the part will show up in your search.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

I assume that they all sprang from Mamma Yamaha's bosum, so it is just a matter of how you want to get there.

Research shows that the '82 XJ shared the same front caliper with the '81 LH, (that's the Midnight Special right?) part# 4W1-25810-10-00. I find a seal kit part# 4L0-W0047-01-00 for the LH but nothing turns up for the XJ. Is there a reason why a seal kit for the LH would not fit the XJ? I found this in the K&L catalog
http://www.klsupply.com/Home/2013KLS...QuickView.aspx
left side of page 310 shows front caliper rebuild kits for all the XS models but nothing for the XJ. I'm wondering if the 32-1602 for the '81 LH would fit the '82 XJ?
Boy, finding parts for these old bikes can be an adventure!Billy

The XJ front caliper doesn't have any external dust seals.. that's by design. What it does have is a similar large piston seal like the XS bikes, and instead of an external seal, it has a smaller, secondary seal in lieu of the external one. And yes, the caliper kit for the LH will fit the XJ...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Are these 2 seals you mention available anywhere or just run it and use the winter months to tear down and clean up the calipers?Billy

At this late date, I'm sure you can only get the outer seals in a complete seal kit.
And to replace these, you'll have to pull the piston out of the caliper. Might as well do the full rebuild.....Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two
