Hey there Clay,
As Steve and Scott(3Phase) have pointed out, your bike looks PRISTINE!
BEFORE you go doing any customizations, we ask/plead/beg you to get the bike into running condition and just RIDE IT to see how it performs and feels.
We have seen many newbies come here with newfound bikes, talk all sorts of customizations...go cutting and chopping and hardtailing, just to loose interest or lack of skill, and end up parting out the remains of what ONCE was fully functioning fine XS11 machine that could have served someone for many years and thousands of miles.
So this is why we are curious as to what type of customizations you may be planning. If you are wanting to cut/chop it up severely, we would ask that you contact someone in your area with an already broken down or disassembled machine that would not be of much concern regarding what was done to it!
Take a look for the Bike Photos thread in the members lounge, you'll see some fine examples of some quality customs, as well as many fine oem machines.
Jeff, I also HATE full fairings....so big, heavy, block a lot of your view of the road around you, etc.. One of the things that I have that make riding without a fairing/windscreen tolerable is just a simple backrest....it supports my back, takes the stress off of my arms so I don't have to HANG ON to keep from getting blown off the bike! I have used a smaller clear windscreen when taking a long distance ride/trip as well as protection from cold/freezing temps. Others talk about being able to have a full sound system in their Fairing, or other storage spaces in the pockets. Whereas the windscreens are lightweight, clear, and quickly removeable. JMHO.
