    Hey there Clay,

As Steve and Scott(3Phase) have pointed out, your bike looks PRISTINE!
BEFORE you go doing any customizations, we ask/plead/beg you to get the bike into running condition and just RIDE IT to see how it performs and feels.

We have seen many newbies come here with newfound bikes, talk all sorts of customizations...go cutting and chopping and hardtailing, just to loose interest or lack of skill, and end up parting out the remains of what ONCE was fully functioning fine XS11 machine that could have served someone for many years and thousands of miles.

So this is why we are curious as to what type of customizations you may be planning. If you are wanting to cut/chop it up severely, we would ask that you contact someone in your area with an already broken down or disassembled machine that would not be of much concern regarding what was done to it!

Take a look for the Bike Photos thread in the members lounge, you'll see some fine examples of some quality customs, as well as many fine oem machines.

Jeff, I also HATE full fairings....so big, heavy, block a lot of your view of the road around you, etc.. One of the things that I have that make riding without a fairing/windscreen tolerable is just a simple backrest....it supports my back, takes the stress off of my arms so I don't have to HANG ON to keep from getting blown off the bike! I have used a smaller clear windscreen when taking a long distance ride/trip as well as protection from cold/freezing temps. Others talk about being able to have a full sound system in their Fairing, or other storage spaces in the pockets. Whereas the windscreens are lightweight, clear, and quickly removeable. JMHO.

Hi. The boards were on the bike when I got it. I suspect they were dealer installed when new. They are coordinated with forward controls (the shifter side is a heel/toe setup.) The brand name is 'Markland' if you google 'markland floorboards' you'll find lots of hits about Goldwings, the ones for Yamaha have been out of production for who knows how long. Post in the parts wanted section here and on craigslist and of course watch Ebay.

I plan on running the bike before i do anything. the only thing i will do when im cleaning/fixing everything is the tires. I think i might redo the seat somehow but that will be after i ride for a little while. Im not going to take a saw or anything to it dont worry. I just want it to look custom some way. I gotta get more ideas. I wouldnt dare trying to take on building a bobber or anything with this bike, it wouldnt do its justice. The previous owner took great care of it and babied it. You cant go wrong when you find a bike over 30 years old with the original owner. Dont worry i will do it justice. Not tear it down and ruin it.

Music to our ears!!!! Now custom paint is always a fun way to make it stand out.

TC thanks for the backrest idea, what do you use for that and what kind of small windscreen do you suggest (you can PM me about this). Thanks. Hey Cwork, that bike does look very good and you are to the good $800, I thought i did good for $500. As others have said, i believe you'll like her just the way she is. I have a xs750 i am going to café but it "feels" like a café bike. When you ride the xs11, it "feels" like it is exactly what its supposed to be, for my anyway. Good luck and great buy. OH, the more original, the more money you'll get if you sell it.

              Clayton,

Whew! I'm glad you're not planning to dive in with a torch and angle grinder!

What kind of experience do you have riding and wrenching?

I forgot to mention them earlier but I was just over at the UK site to see if they still have any pictures of their bikes:-

                    Hi CWork,
CF1 came from the factory complete with a torsion bar swingarm suspension for it's wheel.
Mind you, the design was not of the best and the stacked ribbon-style torsion bar was subject to failure. yours may have had it's wheel permanently bottomed out if the torsion bar had failed. If so it's as well the PO parked the rig. Next after torsion bar failure is the wheel and swingarm fall off in the street.
At least the purchaser had the money. You did get the money, right?

just my two cents on this but get it running. let us know how it is running, check the sync on it to make sure that it is all good. Like you said replace the tires also. Mine sat for 17 years and I am working on it piece by piece with help from everyone here mainly greg. Do you have maintnence records? Check the plugs also to make sure that they are good and not showing serious signs of fouling. Clean it up and make it shine. Do the xs11.com site proud and keep in touch. I got mine about 2 weeks ago and have ridden it a couple times to find bugs in it and now fixing them with help. I was told by the PO that the carbs were rebuilt and he even had a receipt to show for it. I found out today with the help of Greg that the guy is a liar or put used parts in it and said it was rebuilt and just faked a receipt. I will never know but I am telling you keep it running solid then think of customizing. These guys on here pretty much know what they are talking about. And when you post on here we are pretty quick to answer.

As you want to make the rally in a couple of weeks, try it with the fairing and bags. After, take them off and see how you like it. You may find you will keep the fairing for "trips", and run without for most of the time. The saddle bags can hold a LOT of "stuff", and keep it dry when you go on long trips. Soft bags WILL NOT keep things dry, trust me!
Let us know if you need anything! But no, I do not have any floorboards.

Fairings and hard bags typically are worth about $100 for one or the other in good condition. Fairings are hard to sell because shipping costs are so high. Really exceptional examples can bring more to the right buyer (good original paint that's color-matched to their bike), completeness counts, etc, etc...

It all depends on how bad the buyer wants them...
