So I just picked up my first bike, an '82 XJ11. I love it. Its comfortable, quick and gets me out of the car. Only has 13k miles, has a few flaws but it is awesome. I do have a few things I am concerned about are, there is a fuel leak somewhere, the bat and brk stay lite on the control panel and the seat can't come off because the left release tab is broken off. All that said. Not bad for a 31 year old bike that cost a grand inspected and ready to go.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRGw05umxQg

Welcome!
The battery light is most likely because originally there was a sensor in the batter that measured the battery health. Nowdays they dont make many of those batteries so people just put a regular cheap battery in it and leave that sensor disconnected. Then the light lights up.
There is a fix for it. Can't remember what it is but I am sure someone will chime in with it.Nathan

Welcome!
From the looks of things your bike has been leaking gas from the carbs and onto the engine. This happens for 2 reasons, leaky petcocks and leaking float valves internal to the carbs. Both can be fixed with some time and patients. I'd suggest you use the off position on your petcocks until thoae issues are resolved because if the carbs leak gas it can end up in your engine oil which can do bad things. All your solutions are on this forum somewhere, try searching and if you get stumped let us know.'79 XS11 F

Welcome, the XJ's are great bikes. Fuel leaks however are nothing to take lightly. They can ruin your bearings and your day if it catches fire. My advice is to fix the leak and change the oil and filter before you run it anymore. Just don't want to see your small problem become a big one.

Welcome aboard the crazy train express. Nice looking XJ.
As for the battery light, ignore it. There is a sensor that goes in the battery, As Nate indicated hardly anyone makes it, so it goes unconnected and leaves the light on.
As for the brake light, make sure you have good brake fluid level in both MCs. There is one for the front bake, and one for the linked front rear brakes. That is the only thing the sensor detects, so, if your fluid levels are good, the sensor is bad or you have a dirty connection most likely.
The gas dripping, well it looks like it starts pretty high up, so could be you have a leaking float valve, or the float was stuck.
As to the Petcock position. Stock, these bikes came with a vacuum shutoff valve that would turn the fuel flow off when the engine is not running when the petcock is in the ON or Reserve position. The PRIME position bypasses the vac valve. So, if your vac valve is working correctly and present, yes you can leave the petcocks in ON when the bike is off. If not, then turn the petcocks off when the bike is not running.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Also, in your video when you turned the petcocks off you turned them to the "prime" position. Off is with the handle forward.Greg
