    Hello guys. I got my `79 standard together and finally took it for a shakedown cruise around Lansing. The bike has HUGE power and it seemed to handle OK. The brakes worked fine, all my electrical work seems to have paid off, as all lights work, and it is charging the battery.

    Here's my problem: It won't shift any higher than 3rd gear. It feels like the shifter moves up when I'm in third, but no shifty. It holds second gear under power, which was a nice surprise, but there's something wrong with the trans.

    Has anyone else come across this problem? It looks as though I'm going to have to tear into the transmission, which I'm fairly sure I can handle, but I'd appreciate your thoughts before I flip her over and tear her open.

    Background: this bike sat for about 15 years before I did all the work to it to bring it back from the grave.

    Start with the shift cover on the left side. Look at the shift drum to be sure all the pins are in there.

          Yep, once I lost fifth gear on a trip. Was really weird. Pulled off the left side shift cover and found one of the 'fingers' on the sheet metal dowel retainer has bent up enough to let the dowel pin fall out. Put it back in, bent the plate back into shape and all was good again. NO idea how that happened.
          Bone stock 1980 Special except for the exhaust and crashbars. Oh yeah, and the scabbard for the Winchester Defender.

            Aside from pins and the sheet metal plate on the shift drum, the shift pawl may not be in proper alignment with the drum. There are alignment notches on both designed to be set when the bike is in 2nd gear.

            Also, that sheet metal plate is not that strong, and once bent, it can rebend more easily than it did the first time. So...if you do find it bent, you might want to look into replacing with a new one.

              You guys were right!

              Sure enough, the sheet metal star-shaped cover was all bent up, allowing for one of the small pins to come out. Surprisingly, I found it in the oil pan back when I dropped a camshaft bearing nut down the cam chain tunnel I had to pull the oil pan to fish around down there and I found a "mystery pin."

              Now I know what it is for. I want to replace the sheet metal cover, and I'm seeing it as part # 2H7-18561-00-00 . Motogrid shows this as unavailable.

              Does anyone know where to get one of these?

                Gonna have to find a used one, seems to be NLA. I'm sure someone has one laying around for you.
