Agreed. If it is that bad, do it right.

Yes, you could leave it in there, but it will continue to rust and deteriorate the shaft and sleeve. It needs cleaned out and a lubricant installed. Then it becomes a question of do you want to have to take the shaft out every time you want to renew the lubricant, or do you want to be able to flush the crud out with a fresh injection of grease. One way or another, the shaft needs removed and cleaned of rust, the sleeve cleaned out as well.

As it has been 30 odd years since it was probably done last I do not think I would worry about how many times one needs to do it. Yes a zerk would be better, but I agree removal and a good clean is the only way to go. With an appropriate lube it could last for years to come.

Try it if you don't like I'll buy it back from you I promise, it makes rust go away, what have you got to loose but allot of work ! Snake oil ? What if it works for you ? ? ? ? ?

          zerk

i was asking about the zerk fitting as something to do so that i dont have to remove the whole shaft again. i am going to take the the lever off and remove the shaft and clean and regrease. i wasnt looking to do the zerk instead of doing it the right way, i was thinking about future aplications and not having to do this again. thanks for all the help.

I have done this on all the bikes I have worked on, cleaning the brake shaft and sleeve, not adding a zerk. Like others have pointed out, after 30 years of use. And for the ones I have been resurrecting, 30 years of HARD living, this is the first time it had been done I am sure. So, if you feel the urge and just like the fun of tinkering and drilling this stuff, go ahead, add the zerk. My thought is, I will be dead and gone before it needs it again.
