Euro shift linkage

You need a bunch of parts to convert to the 'Euro' controls...
That linkage mounts on a different shift cover that has the forward pivot built-in. The footpegs are also completely different, and you also need the rear footpeg/mufflers mounts as well as those are needed to properly locate the front pegs. So if you have a Special, it's a no-go as the muffler mounts won't fit your frame unless you can find a set of the ultra-rare 'Sport' mounts. There's also a different brake pedal.
I know of one guy who 'converted', and all the parts ended up costing about $300 by the time he got them here from Europe.. These bikes are worth more money overseas, and so are the parts...
There's a ton of 'detail' differences between the US bikes and 'other' versions sold in other markets.
Oops, I noticed you're in NZ. You guys got some yet different again versions, but some of the euro models were sold there (as well as some US-style models), so somebody may have the parts you'll need locally.Last edited by crazy steve; 06-16-2013, 01:55 AM.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Thanks Steve, that makes sense having the pivot mounted to motor and not the frame. Ive spotted this linkage on Ebay and also what looks like a shorter brake pedal, still keen to see pics of the pivot if anyones got any.80 SG

Here is the engine cover you need for the pivot. I've had thoughts about buying the engine cover so I can use the pivot but cost has always been a factor not to mention available time. If/when I do it, I thought about making my own pegs and not going with the euro ones. They could mount to the aluminum bracket that holds the exhaust. My idea is to make it more agressive than the euro style but less agressive than a real pair of rear sets. Might save money and I get to decide final location. That being said, I'd probably have to make custom linkages. I think the style can be had for less than 3 bills the way I plan but not without some time.

Steve, the alloy pillion footpeg and muffler mounts on my SF are exactly the same as an RH's. They just differ in the colour and don't have the fancy little scroll work machined into the outer face.
It's just the riders footpeg brackets that are different, and of course the brake and gearlevers.
Here's some pics of mine with some normal Special footpegs, mounts and brake and gear levers just for a comparo.
Maybe just a fiddle with the Euro gear linkage to get it pointed like mine is, and a little fab work to get the pegs in the right position, and you'd have to source (or make) a shorter brake pedal to match.
^ Gearshift side
^ Brake side.
This peg position really suits the lower Rh style, or clubman bars to a tee!79 SF Special W/ Stock all original motor @ 384,000klms

Interesting that they use the same mounting points for the pegs, but move them back that far. It looks like thick sheet metal used for the foot peg brackets.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

The best way to explain the Euro pegs (that I've seen) are they are almost identical to the US pegs except if you took your US pegs, loosened the engine mounting bolt and rotated the peg up and to the rear of the bike you whould have a position very close to the Euros.
The Euro pegs have two bolts, one is for the main engine mounting bolt that goes all the way through to the other side of the frame then another one that bolts through the aluminum 'stay' and into the peg mount.Last edited by WMarshy; 06-17-2013, 06:00 AM.'79 XS11 F

Yes, mine are custom mounts for the pegs. Mine actually sit a tad more to the rear than the factory RH brackets.
I was just proffering up options other than going the full sourcing and importing of parts gambon which usually ends up costing $$$$$79 SF Special W/ Stock all original motor @ 384,000klms

Do any of you Aussies not know how to weld and make custom everything for anything??Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Don, a lot of the time, it's a case of having to build stuff if we want it, as parts or accessories for these classics are few and far between, plus the cost factor alone makes it far more desirable to try to fabricate stuff ourselves as opposed to buying mostly imported parts for these old bikes.
Lately, even non running restoration projects have been pulling between $1,000 and $2000 over here, as compared to some of the bargain priced bikes I've seen on the Bay in the States, seems almost lunacy to spend so much for a wreck of a thing over here.79 SF Special W/ Stock all original motor @ 384,000klms

Necessity is the mother of invention. Welding is one of those things I have always wished I could do, but then I think I would be divorced as I would never leave the garage.
I guess I should not tell you what I paid for this '93 GSX600F then.
I am pretty close to being ready to put her back on the road and have less than $1 a cc in it total as of now. Time I add paint and mirrors and a petcock will be just under $700 I believe.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

It's ok, Don. I've gotten used to seeing the bargain bikes bought over there in the States. Looks like a pretty good buy.79 SF Special W/ Stock all original motor @ 384,000klms
