new tires-first ride

I got the new shinko 777 front and rear tires installed yesterday and tried them out this morning. left early 'cause it's gonna be 111 here in mesa today!
the 777 rear seems to be pretty much like the former shinko 712 so no apparent issues at all and hope to get about 8,000 miles out of this one as well. however, the 777 front is very much better than the 712 front. no more "hunting" or following all the grooves and imperfections in the roadway. feels more stable on the "raingrooved" sections of the freeway as well. I like it so far, will try to get some miles on it in the next week or so if the temps drop below 105! btw, $132 delivered to my door from mc superstore. not bad.

What did you put them on? Your model is not in your signature so I cant tell what size rear you have... is the 777 available in a 17"? I just got a 17" Shinko 712 from motorcycle superstore for $67... decided to go with the avon venom AM41 in a 110/90-19 for $116. I havent tried too many different front tires b/c the last a few seasons but the Avon inspires confidence on this bike...imo

What helped you choose the 777? What is the difference in 777 vs 712? They both are H rated and very similar in price. The only thing I can find is the 777 might be a stickier tire and tire life may be shorter? Both are available in the rear sizes for a Standard or Special.

I put a 230 Tourmaster on the front of my 80G for this season. No better or worse than I expected, just a good tire that doesn't follow grooves in the concrete slabs. I will go with a 230 Tourmaster on the rear when the D404 that came on the bike is worn out, probably by the end of the riding season.

The load rating of the 230 Tourmaster is higher than the 712, not sure the load rating of the 777.

Anyone know the load rating of the 777?

my bikes's an '80 xs1100 special. I went with the 777's because the front does not have the continuous center groove and now I've confirmed that it handles better than the 712 front. the 230 front has a staggered but continuous center groove so somebody else will have to report on how it handles btw, my old 712 front still has about 40% of it's original tread left after about 8,000 miles. the new 777 feels softer so it may work better but probably won't last as long. ok by me, they are cheap enough to replace every year. now I just have to wait for September and cooler temps to get out on the bike some more.

I can report the 230 Tourmaster does not follow lines in the road, spent a good amount on the concrete slab today on the 80G.

I can see how you went completely away from any center groove at all, based on your experience with the 712.

When I look at the 777 front tire on-line, I see a picture that looks just like the 777 rear tire? Are they the same tread?

yeah, I hear you. but then, I get to ride from sept through may. it's one of the reasons I left seattle for phoenix yes, the tread pattern of the 777's front and rear is the same. I would have liked to gone up to a 110 in the front but as it is the 100 is a real tight fit between the fork sliders on my bike without taking off the fender and fork brace. I deflated the tire, put a little bit of liquid soap onto the disc brake brackets and squeezed it in. worked great. i'm sure this new front tire will be fine.

Nice. Keep posting back as time goes on and you get some miles on the tire, interested in the tread life you get.

With any brand tire that I have used, if there is a worn area of the tread around the middled (i.e. flat spot in the profile), a new tire will improve handling characteristics. Is that what your replaced tire looked like?

Hi Mark,
you can fit a 110/90 if you pull the fender and twist the fork sliders outboard just enough to fit the tire & rim between the calipers then twist the sliders back straight to get the brake disks back into the calipers.
I know it's seldom a problem in Arizona but the 110 has very little clearance inside the fender so beware riding on muddy roads.

the 712 front tire I removed still has 40% of its tread left. the new tire's improved handling is from it's different tread pattern, at least on my bike. may be different on another bike, dunno. and fred, I thought of that but decided that the stock 100 size tire would be fine and easier to deal with when the front wheel needs to come off again. thanks.
