Unless that cam chain is really bad I wouldn't mess with it right now. It can be replaced without splitting the cases. For now just keep your eyes on the prize, unless there is a known internal engine issue, and fix the tranny. Refreshing the starter clutch is just a given if you pull it out anyway.

Be sure and get all the gear chunks out of there.

All the 1100 XS's and XJ's have the same engine and transmission, basically.

Read up on the dremel fix and be prepared to dremel at least 1st and 2nd gears and the 2nd gear washer swap before you install it.

Don't be lazy and screw yourself like I did and have to do it twice.

Yeah I read it over. Seems pretty straight forward. Ill make sure to do that. I am looking now but is there a thread on here showing how to split the case without removing jugs?

Edit: NVM I found it. Didnt realize there were so many parent thread categories! Just needed to scroll down. This site is layed out amazing!

I don't think so but it's pretty straight forward. Keep track of where the case bolts come out of because they are different lengths. A piece of cardboard with holes to stick the bolts in works well.

There are 6 or 8 bolts in the top I think. There is 1 or 2 under the breather plate so it has to come off. Take off all the side covers,middle drive, and the starter. remove all the case bolts in the top and flip the engine over on it's back and remove the case bolts in the bottom half. you pretty much have everything off down there that needs to come off.

Be sure you have all the bolts out and with a little persuasion that bottom half should lift off.

If I missed anything I'm sure someone will chime in and let you know.

The gear and shaft parts are the same, however, in the later years, they used a slightly narrower bearing in the engine case, and so they had to use a thicker spacer...again this was in the ENGINE Case, not the gears themselves.

In 81, they added an extra washer/spacer for the large bolt that secures the countershaft in the tranny/case on the clutch side.

See these official Yamaha microfiche to view the difference in the countershaft bolt and extra washer...but since you have the 79, yours will have just the large head/washer and bolt combo alone.

It's rare, but also look at 3rd gears dogs slots...it wasn't in the tech tip, but a few members have had their 3rd gear slip also, and one didn't find it until after he had done 2nd, so like Greg, had to go in a second, and I think even a third time! 3rd was the only gear dog/slot set that Yamaha actually undercut at the factory, but they can still wear!

I will check them over and do the dremmel fix (checking third gear) and begin the swap. Finally.
