  • which side of coil is negative? for audiovox installation

I am putting cruise control on one of the bikes and need help with the a detail. The I need to connect a wire to the negative side of a coil, but not sure which side that is? Anyone know a little more about the details of the ignition system than I do.
    Thanks,
    Scott

Negative will be either the orange or gray wire.... the red/white is positive.

Orange and gray eventually get to ground. However, they are interrupted by the TCI, which is what fires the coils. The red with white feeds 9.* volts to the coils while the engine is running, and 12.* when the starter solenoid is engaged.
There are two red with white wires feeding the ballst resister. One of the wires is hot, and the other feeds the two coils. If you need 12 V to feed the equipment, unplug the two wires, turn on the key, and see which one is hot. Us it as a feed. If that signal is used for RPM data, be aware that it will pulse every half revolution of the crank.
You didn't mention what year bike you have, so the forgoing is applicable to 78-80 XS11's.

        thanks!

The bike in question in mostly a 78E. My understanding of the audiovox is that is "counts" the pulses and then maintains that count to hold speed, so sounds like it should work.

Should wrap this up during an evening in the garage next week and will report back.
        Thanks again,
        Scott

If that signal is used for RPM data, be aware that it will pulse every half revolutio

Why is that? Does each coil actually fire twice per revolution? The cruise control worked at 50 mph but not at spirited interstate speeds so I think I need to adjust a setting related to "pulse per mile". Currently set at 4000 but if there is a pulse on negative side of coil twice per rpm I will need to change that. Anyone have input?
          Thanks,

From my understanding our systems are wasted spark so there should be two firings per revolution. On my tachometer (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1) hooked to the negative side of the coil it reads 1/2 of the V8 scale. Unless I am reading it wrong and my bike is idling at 550 rpm.
