  • XS1100H - Engine runs great but at 5 - 6000 rpm

I just installed a set of rebuilt and cleaned carbs and fired it up for the first time today. I turned the pilot screws 1.5 turns. The engine starts right up and runs great but at 5 - 6000 rpm. I tried turning the pilot screw in and out with no change. When I turn the choke on it slows down for a bit but speeds up again. I checked for air leaks and can't find any. I am using an auxiliary gas tank and I have plugged all the vacuum fittings. I re-installed the 110 main jets and removed the rubber pugs as per instructions on the site and installed washers and o-rings on the pilot screw. Any ideas?

Just want to mention that there is slack in the throttle cable. I moved the linkage back when it was running and nothing changed.

Idle screw all the way out? The big knob between 2 and 3.
Intake boot clamp getting hooked on the #3 carb lever?
Did you take your butterflies all the way out and end up putting on in crooked?

+1 on checking the idle screw setting.

I will check the idle knob. I haven't adjusted it yet. I assume you mean the metal knob underneath between the block and the carb dead center between 2 and 3? I did do a bench sync. I looked underneath and couldn't find something any blockages.

Try to uninstall your throttle cable and start your bike. I had the same problem 2 days ago. When I tryed with no cable the idle was good. I put the cable back and the problem disappeared.

Ok - I have a spare set of carbs on the bench and looked at how the idle screw works. I could not move the screw on the bike by hand and will try tomorrow with pliers. I assume I screw the knob in to reduce idle speed? Thanks

Yep, think of it like a normal screw, Righty Tighty, Lefty Loosey. Tighter raises the RPM, looser drops the RPM.

Loosened the idle nut and she purrs like a kitten at 1100 RPM. Thank you for the help. Strange that I cannot remember tightening the nut. Now I will attempt to sync the carbs and the grand daddy of them all - color tuning!

Interesting how the sync involves the adjustment points and the idle nut. As I tried to sync 1&2 & 3&4 I had to loosen the idle nut because the idle shot up to 3000. It is running very nice after being synced.
