    When a 10 isn't enough, get a 11. 80g Hardbagger

I already have new fill plugs for the mid and final drive on order, so ugly don't matter. Just have a space problem, sidebags are an issue, and would rather not remove them, as there are lights around the rear end (PO did this), and the wires run through the bags. Local bike shop said they could do it for me if all else fails.
If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game. (borrowed from strom)

        ah ha

So i bet if you hadda taken that bag off to start with you wouldnt have this trouble now. Sometimes shortcuts dont pay off. After i made quite a few mistakes myself i figgered that out lol.Take your time you can do it yourself take the bags off and fix the fill plug. Its only nuts and bolts.Good luck.....................MITCH

          Oil.

If you have got the drain plug out, and you dont mind the work, remove the rear wheel, then drive unit at the four bolt's, and add the recomended amount of lube. The correct quantity is in the manual.
Just my two cent's worth, but I dont suggest you listen to my advice, I think I just distroyed my engine, due to neglecting an oil filter change (see"What have I done")post.
Maby I have will have a rear drive I can sell you cheap.

Actually Poolboy, that's exactly what I did this morning. I was tired of wrenching and wanted to ride, so I did some more wrenching , and vroom!! So now I know how to remove and install a final drive. Now I believe there's a carb issue to address, due to the new pipes (4-2). She runs fine at idle when warmed up, but from take off to about 3300rpm, she stumbles a bit. After 3300, hold on to your a** (like any good XS is want to do ). Local shop can re-jet for ~$200 or so, depending on how many times they have to get into it, but I'd kinda like to know ahead of time which way to tell them to go. Any ideas?

I have a K & N air filter and 4-2 exhaust in my 79 SF with 142.5 main jets. It runs ok but on the rich side. I will be going down to 140 mains and raising the needle 1 notch when I get the outside of the carbs clean. Stock 79 SF came with 137.5 mains. You may not need to rejet. You may try riching up the idle with the pilot screw a tad.

No dice CA. I've got over 200 miles since getting her back to running trim, and I can tell you it's not just the low end that stumbles. Cruising down the highway @ 85mph, gave the throttle a crank, and she wound out a bit more and started sputtering again. Not sure of the speed (I was watching for those wily and unpredictable cagers) but now I know I have low- and high-end stumble. I've been to 125mph on this ol' gal, and all she ever did was ask for more, which I didn't mind at all, 'cause if I'm going down at that speed, it shouldn't hurt for more than a few seconds.

A rejet, tune, and synchro is in the near future.
