The clutch plates are stuck together from a long time sitting. Once you get the engine running you can break them free pretty easily, just get on while running in neutral and dump it into 1st gear.

The red warning light is most likely to be the battery light. If your bike does not have a stock battery it will flash until you either buy one that has that indicator built in (good luck with that) or do a fix that is documented here somewhere. I forget exactly what to search for or how to fix it but I think it has something to do with running a diode in the line to fool the instrument cluster.
Someone on here will know what I am talking about...just not me. The guys at the XJ site will know for sure but there is a fix for it posted on this site. I sold my XJ so I kind of let that info be forgotten.

If you part it out, you deserve all the bad Karma that comes your way.
Why don't you get it running and sell it to someone who can appreciate it in all it's stock glory.
Use the money to buy a beat up one. Part IT out.

Look at the top of the battery, and count the filler holes. If your battery has the small yellow plugs, and there are seven of them, the odd one is where the battery gauge's sender plugs in. All it is, is a wire that goes down to about a quarter inch above the plates in the third cell. The sender has a wire that goes into the acid, and the gauge senses the 6 +/- volts and if the water drops below the sender, the volts quit, and the gauge lights up. There is a wire with a connector close to the battery, just a single wire, White /red on the stock bikes. That is the gauge wire. It goes in the third cell in from the positive end, and the part that goes in the acid is made out of lead, so a piece of solder could be used to make a sensor. You could fashion something using the stock filler plug, if your battery only has six plugs.

it would cost more to get atitle than the bike is worth.finding any xs11s around here is like digging for gold .there is 80lg for 600.00 with no title about 75 miles from me.running xs here are none exsistint. if i could find an xj not running with title i would keep it .

I would definately not run it again until you check the oil to see if it has gas in it. Theres a good chance it does and that will kill it. You need to take the carbs off and clean them VERY, VERY good.

Don't know what parts you were planning on using from the co for your sg, but there are plenty that will not work at all for you.

If you lived closer I would swap you my 78E for that XJ... But then still not all parts will fit the SG.

It only cost an extra $20 (and about 6 months) to get a a title (as long as no one clames it ans it's not stolen), faster if a bill of sale from the titled owner came with it.

You are correct. Here in Utah it's not as hard as other states to replace titles. And from the sounds of things it's near impossible to get get one in most places.

Here in Wi. if the bike has not been titled in 8 years you just apply for title and pay tax and license, done this twice but the last time was about 10 years ago. Things may have changed, at the time it seemed like the state just wanted your money.
I always free up my clutch before a ride by putting it in gear pulling the clutch lever and cranking it over a few times, keeps it from making that big klunk if you put it in gear with stuck or sticking plates. Once freed put on the choke and start, warm and go, still klunks when put in gear but not as much.
