  • For '81 Owners Only....

There's considerable confusion on these bikes as to which had the 'safety interlock' installed and which didn't. Depending on where you look, it appears that Yamaha intended to install this on all bikes but for some reason not all of them were fitted with it. This poll is to get a idea of how many and which models got it. It's seems to have been fitted to all LH (Midnight Specials) but was hit or miss on the others...

So, how do you tell if your bike has it? If it's in place and working, the starter switch will only work if the bike is in neutral OR if the clutch lever is pulled. But some have no doubt been bypassed by now for various reasons, so another thing to look at is the clutch perch. If your bike has this perch:

... the bike was fitted with it. Note the 'boss' for the clutch lever switch between the cable opening and the handlebar opening. Not there? Then yours didn't have this....

This is a multiple-choice poll, so you can vote each model you have...

Interestingly enough, the clutch safety on Banshee worked fine until I swapped the wiring harness in from ole' Thunderstruck, it had connectors for the switch, but must not have the relay.

Dang looks like your thread is about as popular as a turd in a punch bowl...

Just so you know if I had an 81 I would have responded!

Ok, NEVER heard that one before.
Bone stock 1980 Special except for the exhaust and crashbars. Oh yeah, and the scabbard for the Winchester Defender.

            Safety

yes my LH has it and it works. However mine was number 149 or 169 off the line so no changes were entered into the production at that early stage.

Well, this got rather indeterminate results......

Not very illuminating as to what Yamaha did (or subsequent owners), about the only thing that's clear is that a lot of these don't work anymore...
