  • can u turn the back rotor

so can u turn the back rotor on the 81 special, and does anyone know a good place to find brake pads??

The rotors can't be 'turned', they have to be ground and it generally takes special tooling to do so. There's a few places that can do it, but it will run you about $50 each (that's assuming the rotor isn't below spec on thickness), a good used rotor will be much cheaper. Front and rear are the same, if you have the slotted rotors you'll need the right side...

Brake pads, do a search to see who's got the best deal this week...

You lads across the pond have confused me with terminology in the past so I'm going to ask....

By "turn" do you mean on a lathe?

I've turned XS1100 discs on my lathe without any problems, if you have access to a lathe do your own, if not go with grinding them, it is easier.

As to thickness, the discs I run on one of my XS's are well below the manual prescribed minimum thickness and haul up with twin piston calipers so bite hard, but compared to modern discs are still VERY thick, so our yearly vehicle test (MOT) testers are always happy with them.

              Resurfacing Rotors

I have a guy near me in Marietta, GA. He can resurface them. Can also custom drill one of several patterns in the rotors if you like. Even repaints the centers. Does good work.

I can look him up if interested. Just a matter of shipping him yours.
