  • Pod filters

    About to invest in some pod filters. Wanted to get some opinions on what type to get. Are the Uni pods better than the cones? Advice appreciated. Thanks guys

    The cone type should be run with velocity stacks placed between the carbs and the filters. (see photo) They will keep the inner lip on the filter away from the jets on the back of the carb. Otherwise they can block the airflow to those jets.

      Thanks Lary. That's a clean lookin engine you got there. Where can I find a set of those stacks? Could I use the rubber air box boots?

        Thanks, I've put lots of time into that engine.

        Somewhere on here there is a thread on using the boots, not sure where though. I made the ones that I have out of PVC pipe joints and some Gates industrial coolant hose, #24034 VU (2 1/8" ID). The hose is sold by the inch, 6" is enough to do all 4 carbs. The PVC joints had to have the OD reduced. I chucked them up in my drill press and used a file to take a little off the OD. You only need to remove material from the ends where the hose and filters slip over them. It's been about 5 years ago and I don't remember exactly how I mounted them in my drill press. The 4 velocity stacks are clamped together with some 3/4" plywood that I cutout to fit around them. I used the original upper air-box mount to screwed to the top of the plywood to hold them.

            Yes it is, I installed it last winter. I followed the "Hydraulic Clutch Mod (finally complete)" thread. It's one of the best mods that I have done to it.

              It sounds like your pod mounting has held up well.

              I've used my new cheap 10" HF drill press as a lathe a couple times now. For 3/16" steel disks. I set it on the slowest speed (300 rpm) and used a nice sharp chisel, using a 4x4 as a base. It worked pretty well, though I only figured out how to take the slop out of the spindle AFTER I was done. It should also make drilling a bit more precise, at least until I wreck the bearings

                I've found with some imagination that a drill press can substitute as a lathe rather well in some instance's.

                  That's pretty clever of you. What size were the pod filters you used? I have an xj1100, don't have access to it right at the moment so can't measure the carbs. Any idea if the same size would be needed to do the air box boot set up?

                    My pods are 54mm. The rubber part of the pod is removed and replaced with the rubber boot from the air-box. I believe that the metal part of the filters are the same, they just change the rubber part to fit the carbs.
