Does anyone know how to put the kick start back in? How do you wind it, or how much? I don't have the FSM and it came out when I pulled the clutch cover case. Thanks.

Install the kick start gear assembly. Hook the return spring on the crankcase boss, then use the kick crank to turn the assembly about 180º counterclockwise or until the kick gear will engage the kick idler gear. Remove the kick crank.

Thanks Phil! I was going to try and wind it by hand and try to get it in there. I guess its not a lawn mower pull rope.lol

          Sligtly off topic

          Hi sorry needed some advice.

I have just started rebuilding my 79er, in the workshop manual it says first step is to install the kick idle gear. to my utter surprise I went through all my parts no kick Idle gear. Is it common practice to remove it this is my first rebuild and this is scary to me.

          Thanks Andrew

Sure you have the original motor? Yamaha deleted the kickstarter after '79, with some of the gears staying on the '80-81 motors but it was all gone by '82. Note that this is for US models; that may be different if yours is a different 'spec' sold outside the US.
