  • Straight pipes, are they possible?

Has anyone here had any luck with straight pipes? From what I've read it seems not. Still I am tempted to give them a shot. I'm thinking of making a removable set in case I cannot figure out the tuning. From what I've read straight pipes don't supply enough back pressure, is there a way to customize them so that they will? If any of you know of any ways to make them function properly please let me know. I want more volume, not Harley volume but more than the stock is giving me. I'm also just not too keen on the look of the stock pipes. I know you die hard xs guys may take offense but that's just how I feel. I've come across multiple pictures of xs bobbers with straight pipes and I guess I just find it hard to believe that there's no way around the tuning issues. So if any of you have experimented with custom straight pipes and had any success please help me out. If not I guess I'm sticking with the stock, they aren't so bad. I've been posting a lot of what may seem silly questions since I joined, forgive me if I am annoying anyone, I'm just trying to figure this stuff out and make this bike my own. I'm saving all the stock parts, so don't worry.

By straight pipes dya mean straight through? as in no baffles?

For straight through pipes you can use a washer welded on a stud and bolted in, you don't need it right at the end visible, move it further up the pipe and have the nut toward the swing arm.

Heres one, second pic down CLICKY

You can use a bigger washer than shown here and experiment with angle-ing it like a carb butterfly to get a good tune.

It can be done, the trick is getting it to have good manners and be drivable. What you'll find is it will run like krap most of the rpm range except in one particular zone. Do us all a favor any destroy a junk pair of pipes and not a nice usable pair. Im sure you would find someone willing to exchange you a rusty ratty set for your decent pair. A good clean set can sell upwards of $300-800 pending the shape they are in.

As marshy said don't mess with your exhaust if it is stock (pics help) sell them to someone or trade for a setbof header pipes alone.

There isn't any aftermarket exhaust anymore so we heed to hang on to the good stuff when they show up

the 4 into 2 with turn outs have a nice rumble to them.
the 4 into 1 have a hot rod sound.
that is just what i have noticed.
straight pipes arent a good idea on 11's. IMO

PARTZILLA. Once these are gone, there will be no more. MAC no longer manufactures them.

I dont think it sounds like a crotch rocket exactly. There isnt that high pictched whine those have.

I had a 4-1 kerker on Rising Sun my old 78E...it was different from most I have heard. Pleasant, but only a tiny bit louder than Great Ranger's 4-2 turnouts. These have a pretty good sound without sounding like a Harley (except of course when the muffler extension falls out at the rally, then its loud)

oooooo, those pipes sure are perrrrtttttyyyy!!!!

I've been contemplating doing something like those, look so sweet. I picked up my bike with a set of split 4 into 2s that have custom baffled straight pipes on them. They sound really good, deep sound, very sporty. But I hate the way they look. Also don't really wanna mess with the set up too much because riding season literally just hit here this week and the thing is tuned perfectly right now haha. maybe that would be a project for the winter lol.

I don't think I can resist cutting those baffle pipes down though. They looked good ending past the saddle bags, but now that the bike is stripped they stick way out behind the tire and look kinda goofy... My saw zaw may be helping out with this later haha.

The 4-1 with the single fat pipe sticking out is clean, and def gives a more modern rocket look. If thats what you're shootin for then go for it. If you want a cruiser feel, then I think you'd be more happy with dual pipes. Depends on what look ya want! Really anything with more flow will give ya some extra pep and some more decibels for the sheeple texting away in their suvs

The pipes that are on the 79 Special in this video are Mac 4-2 turnouts, without a crossover pipe. 2-1 on each side. That is exactly how the bike sounds.

Thanks for the tips guys. That bike sounds great. Maybe I'll go with that exhaust. What's you have to do with the jets for that one? Are there any other bikes with the same headers? I'd like to find a cheap pair to expirement with.

The jetting on that bike is stock. It also has a K&N air filter and no holes have been drilled in the airbox. I would look on eBay if you want something like those, it's probably your best bet.
