  • Coil repair gone wrong

So about a year or so ago I did the coil repair and it worked great, for the time being anyways. Well about 2 months ago the bike started running weird every now and then. I have been trying to troubleshoot the problem since then. At first it would stumble only when i was going anywhere from about 40 mph to about 70 mph and i had a steady throttle trying to maintain the speed i was at. When i would twist the throttle even a little bit to accelerate it would run normal again but as soon as i held the steady throttle it would stumble again. As time went on i would be riding and the bike would loose one or two cylinders and then run normal again.

I thought it was fuel so i checked the petcocks and they were fine. I knew the carbs were good because i just went through them. So I adjusted the fuel air mixture a little richer but still same problem. I then thought it was ignition so I checked the pickup coils, because they always go bad, and they were good. Finally today i decided to check out some 4H7 ignition coils that a friend gave me because he didn't know if they were good. I checked them and after replacing 3 out of 4 spark plug caps they read good. Since they were good I decided to check my originals on the bike. No good... the #2 and 3 secondary read 3.5 MEGA OHMS, that is not a mistake it read 3.5 MEGA OHMS. There was all kind of corrosion where the wires went into the brass pin on the coils. When i did the coil repair i didn't use dielectric grease and i didn't seal it. I know I had a reason at the time but I can't think of a good reason now. I think I planed on sealing it later... Haha.

I put the 3 ohm coils on and bypassed the resistor. She is running a lot better now. I will see if it fixes all of the stumbling. I'm guessing it will.

Maybe i should of did it right the first time. But it all worked out because now I have the upgraded ignition coils.

I wouldnt consider those coils an upgrade by any means, they likely have the same output as your original ones.

Amazing the amount of work one or two more cylinders will do eh?

Most definately. Its crazy how much power it loses.
