  • Pilot jets

I want to buy resp. order new 45 pilot jets for my '78 Standard, but they are available with cross holes and without cross holes.

Since I am a lazy guy, I don't want to dissassemble my carburators until I got the new jets.

I guess, the pilot jets do have cross holes, but I am not sure. Does anybody know any more about it?

All the ones I've seen do have them, though I'm not sure they are really used. Be careful when replacing the jets though. I blew through my carbs last year with rebuild kits, and threw away the old parts. The pilot jets in the kits were a different size. Even though they still said 42.5. The numbers vary from different manufacturers, I found out. After making numerous trips back and forth to the dealer(trying different jets) I finally ordered used ones from Merriam Cycle.

From what I found out some have 6 holes, some have 8. I am pulling my carbs off of my 78E to rejet this weekend, I will let you know what is in there. The replacement pilots I bought are 6 hole, I hope they are right. From what I am told taking out 8's and putting in 6's will not work or vice versa. My 6 hole #45 jet Mikuni part # is KBS309645. More later....

I'd stick to genuine mikunis - available from any half way decent motorbike shop. All the 78 pilots I've mucked around with have 6 holes. Order the BS type.

You can order them from Dennis Kirk. They cost $5.99 per pair so that's $11.98 for four plus shipping so you might want to look around the catalog to see if you need anything else before ordering.

According to page 49 of my Mikes XS catalog, the six hole pilot jets(Mikuni type BS30/96) have the metering hole at the bottom of the jet and the eight hole pilot jets(Mikuni type VM22/210) have the metering hole at the top(screwdriver slot end) of the jet.
