    Electrical Charging System

    my 1978 XS1100 is not charging its battery
    so my spring project is to troubleshoot the system.
    I have the detailed manual so will start on that shortly but was just wondering if anyone had any useful tips or experiences
    I'll post more as I get into it.

      Check for a melted/corroded alternator plug connector behind the fuse panel. It should have 3 white wires and a yellow.

        That's the likely trouble point, but check/clean all your charging system connections.....

          When doing the feeler gauge test for my XJ, I kept second guessing whether the feeler gauge was getting pulled hard enough against the case. I learned that if it's working right, there is no question.

          Take one of the thinnest feeler gauges in your set, and hold it parallel to and about a 1/4" away from the case covering the coil.
          Turn on the key.
          If the coil is operating, the magnetic field will pull the feelly guage
          towards the case. No pull, bad coil.
          One of my problems was a bad stator. Each of my white wires had continuity to ground. The other problem was with my reg/rect.

          If you find anything bad under the cover, you could send Andreas (andreashweiss) a private message, or post in the Want To Buy forum. Regarding the reg/rec, OregonMotorcycleParts.com (Member geezer), has a replacement.

          Take your time and work through the troubleshooting guides and post with any questions to narrow down the problem before buying anything.
