  • Midnight Special Exhaust

Question for the "Original Midnight Special Owners" ? Has anybody on here had their exhaust rechromed black or had them ceramic coated black? If not then what paint did you use. I am leaning on getting the whole original exhaust system ceramic coated but I want it to look as close to original as possible. I am assuming the originals are black chrome, someone correct me if I am wrong.

When I had my midnight, I was considering a metal dye kit. There are kits that more or less stain the metal like a wood stain. I cant remember where I found the website but it was looking promising. I might still want to dye my pipes on my XJ, just because I love the look.

I believe Mack had his coated. He looked into OEM black chrome, but the price was so outrageous he quickly gave up the idea...

And this was a guy who spent as much to 'duplicate' the 'gold' plating as most guys spend on the whole bike...

        Exhaust

I had mine ceramic coated. I"m not real pleased with the result as I think it has a brownish tint to it, but I went to several places and they were all the same. When originally done they were dull, however when they apply the heat resistant clear coat, it gives it a gloss finish. It only cost me $75.00 Can., but it was the best I could come up with. Just a note on the black chrome. It actually has a grey look to it. I didn't like it at all. It was shiney alright but very grey.

So did you have the ceramic coating done by someone or did you do it yourself?
I'm still looking for someone to replate the gold. So far I have not had much luck.

            Powder coat

            Mack
What engine paint did you use and did you powder coat the side covers?

The Affliction Chevelle has a stained metal body. I think the stain fails at being black as well.

                Ceramic

Yes I had a friend do both the ceramic and powdercoating. He has a very nice, very large blasting booth so I provided the glass bead and he did the beading and painting.
The motor was all powdercoated and the exhaust was ceramic'd. The side covers as well. I have a sign painter friend did the yamaha lettering inside the cover indents. Then clear coated them. They turned out good and it's a pretty close match.
The gold was a bitch to get done. You may have better luck finding someone who uses the correct process down there. I searched for over a year to find anyone who could/would do it. Too many tree huggers up here. Mine were plated with a mixture of 10K gold( small amount) and brass to get the color to match the original.

I had a set of Jardine spaghetti headers done in flat black ceramic. It did help hide the rust spots for sure. I have not yet had it on the street but tuning so far has not affected the color. Soon, will know but unable to answer, yet.
