  • Advice on putting my bike back together

    Hello

Well I'm at the point that I can put my xs1100 special back together. couple of questions

    1. gaskets; I have both the gasket and the grey gasket maker for motor bikes (Canadian tire special). Should I apply this to both sides of the gasket or just one side. If it's one side, is it the top or bottom. (newbees, gotta love us)

    2. The gasket. Is there a top or bottom? If so is it letter side up or down?

    3. Any other advice, other than take it into a shop

Have you tried dry fitting the gaskets? Some only fit one way. As for a gasket maker, I would recommend Yamabond. It is sold/ distributed by Yamaha, and they recommend it. I have used it quite a few times, with great results. It was made for aluminum engines, and doesn't turn hard or brittle when cured. After bilting the cases together, it can be wiped off, so not to leave a mess, and it kinda matches the color of the cases.

The gaskets are for the cylinder and cylinder head.

Use either aviation permitex or oil on the head gasket and Yamabond #4 on the base gasket.

            rebuilding my bike

            Thanks for the help.

Seems I'm going to have to wait another two weeks for the big bore kit to come in.

Head gasket can fit one way. Get a new one and don't use anything else there... like a gasketmakersiliconethingie.
valvecover one... I just used silicone there... loctite.

If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game.
