  • Wiring Loom???

Here is the problem I have Australian XS1100 1978E.
1978E wiring loom had wires and plugs missing from the headlight and instruments. Had a backup loom from a 1980 model, in better shape but still missing some plugs and wires broken. Friend advised me that it was better to get a complete loom so got one from the USA.

Now the problem starts. Left and right hand switch controls were rebuilt, looking nice. Ran the wires down to the loom and yes you all guessed it, plugs are different. So counted the wires and I’m missing wires on the loom left and right hand side. Checked the USA model switches and they are different, Left hand does not have the pass switch, right hand does not have the on off headlight switch. If I replace the plugs on the USA loom to match the left and right hand switches will this make a difference other than the pass and headlight switch not working? Or switches not working at all!!!
Or do I take the time and repair the 1980 loom (more work) or can I simply trace and add wires to the USA loom so the pass and headlight switch work (is this possible)?

Why does Yamaha do this to me!!!!!

Not knowing precisely how the 'down under' bikes were wired, it's impossible to say for sure that this will work without at least some rework. But I'll bet it will...

First, the 'headlight on-off' switch. These were only used on the '78-early 79 bikes here then deleted from all later models. These really had no useful function on our bikes, as the headlight was turned on by the headlight relay. This switch was wired to bypass the relay, so unless the relay had failed or you wanted to turn on the headlight without the motor running, it did nothing. The wires you're 'missing' should be a red/yellow and a blue/black. If you really want that switch to work, you can tap into these at the headlight relay, but I wouldn't bother.

Your 'pass' switch is not something we ever saw; that must be peculiar to Australian bikes. Now, if this switch is a separate item from the 'hi-low' switch (no mechanical or electrical connections between them), I'd say you can just connect what you have and lose the function of that switch. If you want it to work, you'll have to trace out your existing harness wiring (or find a diagram that shows that switch) and add the needed wires.

One other thing that bears mentioning; you don't say what year/model of US harness you have. There's even more 'different' models here, with no less than six different harness assemblies for US models, compared to only three shown for non-US bikes. I'll note that the '78-79 E/F US-model harnesses would have the wiring for the 'headlight on-off' switch (and would be the closest match to your bike) so if those are missing from yours, you probably have the 'wrong' harness and will find yet more 'discrepancies' as you make your hook-ups....

I'd do a very careful comparison of the two harnesses before I got into it too far....

One more thing I should mention; if you do have the 'wrong' US harness (anything other than the E/F one), the wiring to the TCI will be short. The E/F was the only US model that mounted the TCI on the rear fender, all the rest put it under the seat....

          Wiring Loom

The wiring loom is already on the bike, should have checked first!!! So far everything plugs in except for for the switches. The pass switch runs a yellow wire from the Hi Low beam switch and also a red wire into the wiring harness. The only function I can see that would be useful is to warn others of a Police speed trap down the road.

I'll cut the the plugs and go from there. I'll also work on the Looms I have spare. Bugger so close yet so far.

          Thanks for the help.

Correct if i'm wrong!!! So without the one- off headlight switch, the headlight stays on all the time? If so then thats all good as i ride with the headlight on anyway.

Yes, without that switch, the headlight comes on when the engine is started and stays on until you turn the key switch off (even if the engine dies, it stays on till the key switch is turned off).
