Bent valves when following OEM manual rebuild exactly

    There can be one other pitfall to all this if it is an engine you have never had running. If this is a motor you have not seen run before you take the cams out check the timming and make sure the pointer is in allignment. If the pointer is bent and you take the head appart then your reference point for crankshaft position is skewed. These Valves can be very fragile as I had a friend lay the head on a bench and install the cams to get the shim adjustment close and he bent valves without knowing it. Personally I would not even set the head on a surface resting on raised valves.
    To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.
