  • Anyone know of the best way to

Get a jet that is stuck in the hole, the brass broke, so now a screwdriver won't work on it.

its the smaller one, next to the main jet..

The bike is a XS1100 1980 Special , then assuming I get them out, where would be a good place to find the proper one or tw0

    Thanks

maybe a small "easyout" or you could try tapping a small eyeglass screwdriver in the hole.

        I drill them out.....

The bad thing about using a easyout or anything else inserted into the pilot jet is if that breaks off in the jet (and they can; I've got two otherwise-good carb bodies floating around with this problem), you're now pretty much screwed unless you know a good machinist and maybe even then.

Drilling them isn't hard; a drill press is recommended but you can do it without one if you're careful. The pilot jet threads are a common metric size (which escapes me at the moment) so if you use a tapping bit to drill, you can just re-tap the hole and install a new jet.

Left handed drill bits work best. They grab the broken jet and out they come-most of the time.
Slow down and enjoy life. If you are in that much of a hurry, you should have left eariler.

First, before you go any further, spray it liberally with PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench or similar. So not mistaken WD-40 as a rust buster, it is useless compared to these products, I speak from experience on this one. Soak it with the above for a day or so, keep putting more on it as it soaks through.

Then..after it has time to work its magic, try one of the tips given here. I have been successful with an easyout on those pilot jets before.

Another good suggestion I have seen is to use a hex wrench. Find the size that fits in the hole, then go one size bigger and tap it into the soft brass. It will grab and hope fully turn it, and it is a lot less likely to snap than an easyout.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.

Left hand bit works but a right hand works too. I use a small hand drill holder instead of anything with power so that the threads are not damaged so easily. After you get the thing out make sure there is no trace of the old brass in the threads or down in the hole and clean, clean, clean all of those pilot jet passages.

Yes, Jets-R-Us is a great place. I have used them often for both Mikuni jets as well as Keihin jets after my carb upgrade.

Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.
